How does c-740 compare to Fuji 3800?

I am considering the two for my first ever digital purchase. I am looking for a good zoom and good picture quality. I will be using mainly for family and vacation photos as well as sporting events. Which is a better model for a beginner who wants to grow with a camera (and not keep changing).

I don't have a C-740, but I do own 2 uzi's and a c-700 and briefly owned a Fuji 3800. Here's why I sold the fuji:

1) After you've 1/2 pressed the shutter to lock in focus the evf literally freezes the image for a second or so, and I mean "freezes" it dead in its tracks. Once it recovers and you're ready to shoot your figure may be totally out of the picture or has moved out of optimal range. In other words: this camera is not for moving objects at a rate faster than walking speed. During this "freeze" period I would have to estimate where the subject might be and move the camera based on instinctive timing.

2) As with all fuji cameras I have owned the sleep mode is a total misnomer. The 3800 does not go to sleep after 3 minutes, it shuts off! This means you have to toggle the on/off switch and reset your zoom if you wanted to take a "long shot". For spontaneous shooting I found this feature (or lack of) to be a deal breaker.

On the plus side the 3800 took very nice pics and it's af was very accurate. I could crop considerably more than with other 3 megapixel cameras; the resolution was impressive.

Feature for feature the 740 is the winner (if it's anything like my C-700) ..........imho.

Do you think the c-740 is worth the additional $100 in price?

That's something only you can decide. But yes, in my opinion it is. If the C-730 starts dropping in price you might want to consider it over the C-740 providing it has the features you want.

Felt I had to reply to this one. 5 days ago I bought the 3800. Great pics on it but you and the subject better be DEAD still. The shutter speed and lag were terrible (it's only iso 100). I took it back and bought the 740uz. It's night and day difference. Fast shutte speed, bigger zoom, better manual controls. MUCH better camera. I really can't recommend the 3800 for anyone wanting to take action shots. Even in sports mode or using EV compensation it's just blurry as hell.
