You may be missing the point of their interest, SOL.

They are not getting it as a replacement for their F717.
well, as I expected the camera is nothing extraordinary and my s45
gets better results then this using auto mode (except for red eye
problem) I don't see anything to be excitied here. Camera is not
very compact, images are not any better then the cameras that
already out. So, the question is why would you want to get one?
Just because it's something new? I am surprised that some people
with 717 want to get V1, what's the point? there is no substitute
for 717...

Nice to hear from you.... I knew Okinawa was passe and you were headed for Turkey, but didn't know it had actually happened. Who's your boss and what are you up to? (Besides testing out Sony cameras!)
Well, instead of going home to work tonight, I got off the airplane
from the outer islands, dropped my luggage at the house and went up
to Kitamura Camera to play with the new V1. I just couldn't resist,
and since I had already told my boss in Turkey that I wouldn't get
home from the airport until really late, figured why not...

It was dark outside so I was only able to shoot indoors, and even
then coudn't move more than a foot in any direction (so pretty
boring, repetitive pics). The camera is amazingly light (I thought
it would feel like my old S45, but it didn't) and quite thick. But
comfortable enough to use. Response time seems quite fast. I did
notice, however, some really slow shutter speeds, even with the
flash, so of course got several blurred pics. (Even with faster
speeds I got some blurry images; I think they were mainly zoomed).
I haven't had much time to analyze them, but wanted to post this
for everybody. I'll try to go back tomorrow or at least as soon as
I can during daylight and see if I can't talk them into letting me
go outside for a while with it. They can hold my 717 as security if
they like :-)

it's about finding beauty in the commonplace.

Hi Eric,

Well, we are still in Okinawa but are being transferred back to Washington in July for at least a year (what exotic things will I find to photo there? :-)). We're driving cross-country; maybe we'll go through Ohio (where I think you are?).

But I work for a Turkish newspaper editing their English-language Web page (perfect for me since I worked many years at a Turkish newspaper in Ankara) in addition to editing/writing/photographing for an Okinawan publisher. I plan to continue with both jobs in D.C. since most of my work is done via the Internet and hopefully expand my little business.

How are things with you and your business?

Heheheh... you may simply have to be satisfied with the fact that you don't need the V1, and that others feel that they do. :-)

For example, the V1 is not for me personally. Neither were ANY of the S-series cameras for a lot of reasons. But I was also able to see where they had their strengths, along with the reasons that so many might be interested in those cameras.

It's not all gloom and doom. People will still be able to take good pictures with the V1. Really. ;-)

i am neither a sony basher nor a sony lover, but i would just like to point out that you seem to be blindly in love with the sony brand. imho, sometimes it helps to open up your mind and listen to what others have to say about a product before labelling them as trolls. so what if they are in fact trolls? i am sure most ppl have the capacity to exercise independent judgments. you can surely just ignore their posts?

i happened to be lucky enough to play with a V1 here in hong kong as well just this past weekend, but i must say that my initial impression of it was not too good. it does not feel sturdy and it is not as small as i thought it would be (which would be an important consideration in getting one). i trust that picture quality wise it should be good enough for my purpose, but after handling it in person i feel that it just lacks the quality feel of the 5700, 5000 or the oly 5050. even the old s85 felt a lot better, not to mention the s45/50. it feels plasticky...

Good morning, Helen

I'm enjoying and following this thread with great interest! As the saying goes, "if you want something done, give it to a busy person!" After living in the fabled East, as I do, the unique thread of Western culture growing in the States (in contrast to Europe -- and by extension to the Americas) can be exotic. I get back every few years and while I slide right into home like a comfortable old shoe, I sometimes feel like as if Disney had added an Umberto Eccoland to its theme park. I'm looking forward to your shots of Washington. I'm sure we'll see the exotic DC. Before that, though, I'm waiting with everyone else for your impressions of the V1. Enjoy!

Best Regards,

David

Hi David,

I lived in Turkey for four years just before coming here (and four years in Tokyo and three in Australia before that), so I can appreciate your "exotic" statement. We haven't lived in the States in the past 12 years this time around, so it should be a very interesting experience to move back. Every time I go home for a visit, I end up feeling a bit out of place. I remember one visit in which I was sitting in the courtyard of some upscale mall in very upscale Marin County (where I grew up, north of SF) and thinking, "I'm just so far removed from this place, which once used to be my whole world," and decided I could never go back to live there again. (Please don't feel obligated, but you might enjoy this article of mine discussing my culture shock: http://www.turkishdailynews.com/old_editions/08_29_98/feature.htm )

We own a home in Washington, so living there is quite familiar to me, although I must admit I never took many pictures during the maybe six years overall I've resided there and in Northern Virginia. So it will indeed be a challenge to find the exotic; however, I love Washington and if we have to come back in from overseas, I'm happy it's going to be there.

As to the V1, I trust you've seen my two galleries with sample shots? I will probably end up with it as I really need a small camera for my purse, and Sony has always been my camera of choice, but I still haven't made a firm decision yet. (I also can't get into my Japanese bank account at the moment -- that vocabulary is difficult for me to read :-)) The slow shutter speeds really bother me as they did with some other compacts I've had in the past. Someone commented somewhere that it felt "plasticky," but I personally like the feeling of using it. But I hate being one of the first to try out a newly released camera -- there are always bugs that we guinea pigs discover and have to prove to people and then hassle with Sony to get fixed. I think my camera store people would be crushed if I didn't buy it (they haven't sold any yet, and they ordered all the accessories for me, they say). Guess we'll have to wait and see!

Regards,

Helen

Thanks for the test drive, Helen!

BTW, what does 7,800.00 Yen translate to in U.S. dollars ?

Well, "just for me," it's dropped to ¥78,800, or around $679 plus 5 percent sales tax, making the total in the neighborhood of $713. Nice of them to give me around $10 off :-).

BTW Mark, thank you for all your comments on my Challenge pics; I always appreciate them, but your most recent one was quite nice!

here in hong kong we do not have the priviege of playing with the cameras in store the way customers in japan do...so even though i have had my chance of playing around with one in hong kong, i was under pressure not to test out many of its features. i handled it for five minutes trying to figure out the menu (of course the salesppl had no clue either so i figure it would be easier for me to figure it out) but that was it. never got a chance to see the pictures i took in store except on the camera's lcd display.

helen, u commented on the slow shutter speed...do u think that it is slower than other cameras with a f2.8 lens or about the same? i quite like the v1's specs except for the slow lens, proprietary and not-too-long-lasting battery (as reported in some reviews online), and the relatively mediocre macro ability (10cm is it?). i suppose build quality is okay but still doesn't feel as sturdy as, say, the s50. for me, these cameras offer almost identical features with 1 time extra zoom on the v1 but longer battery life and better build of the s50 (and lower price), i still cannot convince myself that the v1 is superior to the s50 (i have put off buying the s50 waiting for the v1 to ship)...i really hope that i will see more pictures taken with the v1 that would encourage me to get it instead of the s50 (oh, i like black cameras too and the s50 has a black version...)....

--Boy that's a low blow the 5000 and the 5700 to me are lousy camera's and yes I have owned both. As far as the 5050 gos talk about a cheap feeling camera? It reminds me of a tinker toy. The knobs to me feel like they will fall off at anytime. I wish you would have used some different camera's for comparisons. Is the V-1 just that bad? hmm...interestingly i have owned the 5000, 5700, G2 and S85 for quite some time too, with the 5700 lasting more than nine months and just parted with me a month ago when i decided to get the 5050 for the faster lens. to me, the G2 felt the least well built of the batch and the 5700 best built.

I cannot see how the V1 (which, fyi, at best is as well built as the S85), is better built than the 5000 or 5700. Just which particular part of the Nikons qualify them as lousy? The V1, imho, is not as well built as i'd like but far from being lousy...as for the 5050, it is as well built as the Nikons, and i honestly do not see anything wrong with the dial...i guess it is just personal preferences, that's all. fyi, all the cameras mentioned above, with the exception of the G2, are almost entirely made of magnesium alloy (maybe you have mistaken the 4040 with the 5050 because the 4040 has more plastic parts to it). how badly built can they be?

Hi Stephen,

Small world, isn't it? I lived there for the first 30 years of my life and cried when we had to leave. Now I go back and can enjoy it but wouldn't want to live there. Couldn't afford to now, anyway.

I suspect you're right about this return to the United States; I'm entirely out of touch with all the changes that have taken place as a result of 9/11. But what I have observed from afar, especially in attitude and direction, frightens me as well. I must admit that I'm simply not looking forward to the move, but hopefully I'll feel better about it once we get settled in.
