**** Canon Image Challenge 100: Best of the Past ***

....and with you doing such lovely pictures...for each platform you should think a little about presentation. If you were doing dumb stuff I wouldn't press you on this...but since it is great, you should be aware of these issues....printing is one, Pbase requires different things, Flickr something else, Wallpapers need different sizes...ect.

But you seem to be there now!

Congrats.

Best Wishes, Traveller

for a couple of days. Literally just got off the road.

Home for a few days, then off to Arizona for a week.

I expect to see many more entries this weekend. And I expect some from long time members who have quietly not contributed for a while. You know who you are!

Have fun, and be creative.

Well, I know what I want to do but now its just making it happen. Tough subject to begin with and as Traveller always says I am too tough on myself.

I would respectfully disagree. For Eligible, you could take almost any photo, and out of the last 99 topics, I promise you that I would find one where it fits.

You take great shots.

Don't worry about the topic to start with - worry about the shot. You will do just fine.

just arrived from Australia and flying tomorrow morning to China (business trip), I will try but am not sure that will be able to vote

...first, I don't care about you voting, I care that you give us your insightful and beautiful images!!!!

But more importantly....and I know you are important....but maybe, and let me say this straight, maybe all the compressions and de-compressions from taking off and landing might not be good for some softish parts of your being...if you know what I mean?

Money comes and goes, being important and needed is nice and I am sure that you are....needed and important...but your recovery comes before anything....listen to me....

I give advice for a living and I want, no, I insist you take very good care of yourself!

Now it is true that I have worked throughout my illness, but I have been gentle with myself....and over time I have cut back 70% of my work...which is maybe why I am finally doing a little better after 10 months.

But you, I will trust you enough that you know best...but be careful with yourself.

Promise?

Best Wishes, Traveller

Here is the story.

In the late 1990's I visited Budapest maybe 3 times a year...for several years. I would always stay in Citadella Hotel, a converted stone Hapsburg fort high up over and therefore controlling the Danube. I would stay in a gun port that was converted under the previous regime as a hotel & retreat for the Communist Youth Party.

It was always full of bullet pockmarks from WWII and though I was an old guy staying in a youth Hostel, it was...cool.

But several nights every visit I would try to go out at night and shoot the Chain Bridge from the Citadel atop Gellert` Hill. I never could do it, I probably have 70 frames of this shot....not one of them worth a lick, though they were shot over years and under varying conditions.

All my other Budapest at night shots were fine...but I think it was the wind whipping up off the river and the necessity of shooting with a long neck on the Tripod to see over the trees that made this...impossible for me for years.

There was also a lot of water vapor in the air so this caused light bleed all over...I have used to burn tool and levels to get rid of most of it.

In any case please feel free to criticize this effort because eventually I will get this single, simple image right!...lol

Best Wishes, Traveller

Hi added an edited version of this photograph to Pending - Top right and left corners cloned and burned, cropped in a little tighter and temperature take down a tad to -10.

Thought please.

Sorry didn't make myself clear, I'm not saying this challenge was tough but rather the subject matter I had in mind was tough to shoot well. I shot it and it came out well but it's too dull so I dumped it. Another one on the way.

To my eye, this is much better.

BTW, the upper left didn't bother me like the upper right did, which distracted my eye from the main subject.

As Traveller said well, take care of yourself.

Have a safe and productive trip. I used to fly a lot as well, but I don't miss it a bit now.

I wish we could have a month for this one!!!! .........I have been admiring everyone's work from afar, as I have been diagnosed with lupus arthritis and am in a lot of pain. But it's looking like a good time to stop moping, and start shooting again. Now if only the smoke from Yosemite would go away, or better yet the fire go out, then I will be able to go outside again. I am 150 miles away from that fire, and my air quality just shot up to 168 today!!!! Yikes. If for some reason the smoke doesn't clear up, and I don't get a chance to shoot this one, I will try to bring something to the table asap.

....I see shooting....even being forced to go out and go somewhere to shoot....as therapy, even physical therapy.

Listen, pain...there's nothing good about it...I thought I could be able to write some great insightful book on pain, or at least this is what I thought when this started for me...but there is nothing to be learned...it is just pain and we have to climb that wall every single day; every single day we are exhausted.

So?

Lots of people have it worse so we should be grateful for everything...this is about the only thing that I have learned....to appreciate every single good moment.

I know this must be difficult on your little boy also...but, but kids are smart, and a brave, if exhausted and often sleepy mommy, sometimes even snappish mom, is still...a loving woman and the child will lean good lessons from your simple courage.

Hey, so buck up billy-boy....lol

Shoot some images, have some fun, it will be good for you.

Best Wishes, Traveller

....but some reminders...and, as my pain Doc keeps preaching to me...."Keep moving..."

There is no cure for lupus, but there are steps you can take to improve your sense of well-being and your quality of life, including:
  • Exercise . Low-impact exercises, such as walking, swimming, and biking can help prevent muscle wasting and lower your risk for developing osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Exercise also can have a positive impact on mood.
  • Get enough rest. Pace yourself, alternating periods of activity with periods of rest.
  • Eat well. People with lupus should eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet.
  • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol can interact with your medications to cause significant stomach or intestinal problems, including ulcers.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking can impair circulation and worsen symptoms in people with lupus. Tobacco smoke also has negative effects on your heart, lungs, and stomach.
  • Play it safe in the sun. People with lupus may develop rashes or disease flares when exposed to the sun. All lupus patients should protect themselves from the sun; limit time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., wearing sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen when you are out in the sun.
  • Treat fevers. Take care of fevers and infections promptly. A fever may indicate an infection or a lupus flare-up.
  • Be a partner in your care. Build an honest and open relationship with your doctor. Be patient. It often takes time to find the right medication and dosage that works best for you. Also, follow your doctor's treatment plan and don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Get to know your disease. Keep a record of your lupus symptoms, which parts of your body are affected and any situations or activities that seem to trigger your symptoms.
  • Ask for help. Don't be afraid to recognize when you need help and to ask for it. Consider joining a support group. It often helps to talk to others who have been through similar experiences.

Thanks Traveller! I do need all the therapy I can get, and as always your words are very uplifting, and if you can get through everyday with what you've experienced, then I'd better step up to the plate with mine..........I don't want to turn into a whiny sick person lol, but it's probably too late for that. So off to shooting as soon as the smoke clears. P.S how have you been, last I heard you were fighting with shingles for months, is this still an on going battle?

All The Best,

Sierra

...high school at the market the other night...and I could be resentful...he stopped to tell me how he had shingles and it was gone in three weeks...me, I am in my tenth month, well past shingles but into Postherpetic neuralgia....

But some of us get it easy, some of us get it hard. I told him that I was happy that he got over his so quickly and well...and I meant it. I am sure he has troubles I don't know about.

You know that Mountain Road image that you liked....I was up there trying to figure out my place in the Universe...Might as well take some pictures....lol

It was very therapeutic though, I may go up this weekend for some more night shots, but of the city.

We'll see.

Be Well, be Happy, Traveller

I was wondering what silenced your camera, now we know. Sorry to hear that. If this is a long or permanent condition you might want to consider switching to lighter weight gear so you can continue to shoot. Like Traveller said it's therapeutic. A high end Rebel body is close to 1/2 the weight of the 7D. And a 70-200 F4 IS is about 1/2 the weight of the big gun 2.8 IS. That is a huge amount of weight differential that might be helpful to you.

None the less, we all hope the best for you.
