V1 in-store test shots

Predictably, they're pretty saturated.

However, the V1 now has the additional feature of having adjustable saturation control, as well as contrast controls. This ought to give the photographer a bit more creative command of the final output.
Thanks for posting these, Helen. I predict your photobase page will
get a lot of traffic.

Is it just me or are those reds way oversaturated?

Thanks so muc--have you ever tried the Minotla F300 to compare or the Optio 550?

Like you, I want this for my purse. I have nust assumed it would outperform those in its class and am still hoping...

We all appreciate your consideration.

If you do go back to the store, could you keep an eye out for the
DSC-U30 and report back to us?

In looking at your flash shots, the flash is balanced with the ambient light.

Since the flash fires at "first curtain" (flash fires first, then ambient light exposure is made afterward), then the camera shake exhibited in say image DSC00026 could be attributed to moving the camera immediately after the flash fired. I had to readjust after my first flash pictures didn't turn out right.

I'm quite impressed with the nice balance of flash and ambient light in the shots (IMO the 717 leans a little heavily on the flash in Fill Flash or Twilight Portrait Mode). And did you all notice the HVL-IRM accessory on the display?

Well, instead of going home to work tonight, I got off the airplane
from the outer islands, dropped my luggage at the house and went up
to Kitamura Camera to play with the new V1. I just couldn't resist,
and since I had already told my boss in Turkey that I wouldn't get
home from the airport until really late, figured why not...

It was dark outside so I was only able to shoot indoors, and even
then coudn't move more than a foot in any direction (so pretty
boring, repetitive pics). The camera is amazingly light (I thought
it would feel like my old S45, but it didn't) and quite thick. But
comfortable enough to use. Response time seems quite fast. I did
notice, however, some really slow shutter speeds, even with the
flash, so of course got several blurred pics. (Even with faster
speeds I got some blurry images; I think they were mainly zoomed).
I haven't had much time to analyze them, but wanted to post this
for everybody. I'll try to go back tomorrow or at least as soon as
I can during daylight and see if I can't talk them into letting me
go outside for a while with it. They can hold my 717 as security if
they like :-)

Hi Linda,

No, I must admit I haven't tried either of those; my only outside-Sony experience was with the Canon S45. I'm stil hoping too; I just need another session with the camera when I can have more time to work with it.

Yes, that sounds like a reasonable explanation. Don't know how I will manage it with all the work I have to do after a long holiday, but now it's become a challenge to get back there and take more pics.

I didn't see the flash on display, but my salesman said earlier that they had ordered it (for me, although I didn't order it nor commit to buying the camera :-)). I'll ask about it when I go there again, although I suspect that all they will show me is the box since there isn't one on display.

It's good to hear from someone who's actually had one in their hands!

I had just noticed the HVL-IRM Infrared illuminator on the accessory sign.

Actually I am very pleased with the results. I did the same thing with the Oly 5050 in CC and they didn't turn out anywhere near as good as these shots. Boy I can't wait until I see that delivery truck show up at my front door. Thanks Helen

well, as I expected the camera is nothing extraordinary and my s45 gets better results then this using auto mode (except for red eye problem) I don't see anything to be excitied here. Camera is not very compact, images are not any better then the cameras that already out. So, the question is why would you want to get one? Just because it's something new? I am surprised that some people with 717 want to get V1, what's the point? there is no substitute for 717...

Hi Helen,

I guess I could call it pocketable, but then again, my wife says most people carry a briefcase or Lands' End bag for what I try to get in my pockets! ;-}
Well, I don't have many pockets -- I'd carry it in my purse, which
would be just fine. But I asked my husband, and he feels it's too
thick to fit in any pockets he has.

Helen
Thanks Hellen. I'll bet this will be a hot thread.
Would you consider the V1 a, "pocketable camers?"

warm regards,

Being new to digicams, what does one have to do to lock focus? On this cam do you have to pull your eye away from the EVF? Turn a knob?

Considering the conditions, I like what I see from the V1. What
did you think of the camera its self. I understand that after your
lock focus there is NO shutter lag. Give us your opinion. Thanks

I am sure this focus problem will be solved by sending the unit
back to Sony service for a "Parmeter Fix". Anyone that buys ANY of
the first 10,000 or so V1's would have to be described as an
optimist. Sony never gets their initial batch of high end cameras
right.

Lets start the "Bad Focus Serial Number Range" thread right now.

BTW, I have a Sony F717 and love it, so I am not a lurking Sony
basher. But, both my 707 and 717 had problems and had to be sent
back. Screw me twice, shame on me....

You are very lucky. You are where they are being released first. I would still be there. On second thought, I would have bought it and the F32X. With a little luck I will have both in a few weeks.

For quick in store shots, I was not dissapointed. I hope Helen went back today and bought it so we can see some outdoor shots.
