the canvas right side viewer.. whenever I press play, it gets a stop or two darker, when i stop playback, it gets back to regular lighting. any ideas?

using .mxf footage from a canon c300 converted via pavtube
same thing with a canon 5d mk3 footage clip in the same sequence
 
There are lots of reports of playback problems with FCP 7 on various FCP forums. Main consensus seems to be that such problems are caused by software corruption.

Did you ever have a previous version of FCP installed on your Mac? If so, then something could have potentially gone wrong while upgrading, leaving you with some older FCP program files still installed.
