By the way, Sony has OFFICIALLY stated that they intend to go after the professional sports photography market. I don't really think that would be possible without going after the highest-level cameras Canikon has to offer.

This I definitely gotta see! :-|

Did they not say some time in August it's still August.
I'm pretty sure they said either early June or July, can't remember. But not August afaik. I highly highly doubt Sony is going to try make people happier that have a discontinued camera. I found it bizarre that the site even suggested this. Where do they pick up the stuff anyway? Strangers on the subway to work or something? Horoscopes?

If so, take the time to learn and appreciate PDAF using video on a99 (and all current Sony Alpha bodies).

Or shot 60p on your alternatives ...

All cameras have their Pro's and Con's, People who deem that one is better based on only one parameter must have a very narrow usage of a camera.

More often the system behavior are judged from a perspective that is heavily colored by the experience the user have from the system they use.

Some quotes come to mind:

"I want a top LCD screen, having the back LCD turned on must be really annoying when looking thru the OVF" (From the Minolta 7 days)
- Completely missing the fact that KM/S have eye-sensor that tells the camera when you are looking thru the VF.

"Anyways, Liveview doesn't work for action ..."
That could well be true if your system doesn't do true PDAF when using Liveview, but that is not a universal truth, is it?

anyone know of any rumors or reports of any future activity by Sony? perhaps in the high end DSLR market to compete with Canon's 5D Mk3 and the even beefier canon and nikons?
I wouldn't mind Canon coming out with something to compete with my A99. I really like their lenses and a camera body that had the A99 articulating screen, live view performance, EVF, etc would be tempting!
If Canon and Sony could merge the best of the a99 with the performance of the 5d3 (61 pt AF, video performance, 30 shot buffer @ 6FPS, AF tracking, high ISO) with the a99's LCD screen, low ISO dynamic range, live view performance, ability to use crop bodied lenses - it'd be just about the perfect camera.

I also remember the firmware update being rumored for August. Now, having said that I won't discredit SAR if it turns out to be wrong. That's what they do, publish rumors, and if you expect them to be right all the time then you should probably not follow that site.

So, is SAR any less qualified as a source to answer the OP's question? I think not. When you ask a question like the OP's you better be prepared far an answer that is pure speculation because the people who have the answer certainly aren't discussing it publicly!
