Why the huge price drop on the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens?

I've been looking at getting the Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM for a while now. I've rented one before, and loved it.

However, I've noticed the price has dropped down to as low as $659 new. Is this due to people selling bundled lenses or is it clearing inventory for a new version of this lens?

Any thoughts?

Thanks you answered the question, and I appreciate it. My comment was directed towards those who were posting prices on the 24-105mm without any insight into why it was suddenly dropping in price.

Thanks again.
It was 799 at my local store yesterday .

This is what it should always have cost. At this price it's a good lens. At $1100 it was awfully pricey for the mediocre (for an L only) image quality.

The market is just flooded with them so many into kits that people are dumping off. They have a new, better version the 24-70 f/4 IS out now and they might be clearing out inventory so they can start using the new one in kits (assuming they don't decide to keep the 24-105 around as a relatively low cost alternative).

Just yesterday afternoon, I was in my local John Lewis department store, and was taken aback to see that their price for a new EF 24-105L was around £1055. John Lewis claims "never knowingly undersold", so on getting home I checked their web price - the same. I own and use the earlier and more compact EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 USM II.

There is a Groupon offer going on here in the Uk that lets you get this lens for £550.

Digital Rev (and other grey market sellers) are selling them for around £529 inc delivery. This really knocks the price out of the second hand market at the moment.

I agree, this lens is not worth the original selling price (ive owned 3), but i do think at the current price its unbeatable.

There's a lot of thread pulling going on with this post. While I appreciate the responses, I'm well aware that I can get this lens at various low prices in different currencies around the world. That's kind of the set up for my question.

The question is... why is the lens suddenly so low, and is this an indication that a new lens is coming out?

No huge price drop at BHP or Adorama. Both sell the lens for $1,149 USD.

That's very expensive. In Australia you can buy a new 24-105 f4L for AU$846 (770 USD).

I bought a 6D (body only) recently and it came in a kit box. The 24-105 f4L was taken out and is sold separately. There are heaps of shops that do this and that's why the 24-105 f4L is so cheap. There are also owners that traded up to the 24-70 f2.8L II after the recent reviews and sell this lens on ebay. I have seen this lens being sold for between 500 and 600 dollars and there are heaps for sale which puts even more pressure on the prices.

It is no indication of a new version being released soon. Pure market saturation.

If you don't mind buying a second-hand 24-105 f4L there is no better time than now. You can pick one up for half the new price [in the US]. I remember when this lens was announced it costed $1600 in Australia. It's now half.

The low prices are from unauthorized merchants with its own warranty, normally seen from Ebay. They are able to do that by buying large volume kit bundle cameras, then sell camera and lens separately to make profit. If you follow the comments, you'll be reading about complaints on products are from bundle package.

It's not new low price. You can do that too to make a few bucks or save a few with same practice - Just buy the bundle package when offer is on.

Here's an example you can find on a legit online store not long ago.

6D + 24-105 + pro 100 printers special for $2200 after rebate

and you can sell this cheap for

6d - 1,600

24-105 - 650

Pro 100 printer - 300

get it? if you just want the lens, sell the camera and printer, you could pay only $300 for the 24-105. Get it? It's just the risk that you have to take and wait for the rebate to come in.... or just pay $650 for no manufacturer warranty "New" price.

This isn't necessarily the case. Bought my white box 24-105 last December on ebay from BigValueInc and just as stated by them it came with the USA warranty. Everything came in the box that should have (and it had not been previously opened), including the original Canon USA warranty card. I do remember others comments through the years though who have not received warranty cards (don't remember who the sellers were).

OP: I agree with the others that it is function of high supply given how many 5DIII and 6D kits have been produced. I don't think an update of the 24-105 is likely given Canon just released the 24-70 f/4.

As I said the new lens is already out.... the 24-70 f/4 IS. Supposedly Canon is preparing to switch over the kits using the 24-70 f/4 IS.

And the 24-105 got kitted up in so many 5D3 and 6D packages that the market got totally swamped by split kit lenses that are for all intents and purposes, new.

And the Tamron 24-70 VC came out as well.

It'd be hard to try to still sell the 24-105L for $1000 if you could get the Tamron for $1200 or the 24-70 f/4 IS for $1025.
