Just thought I would use plus signs instead of asterisks. We don’t want to be stuck in a rut, do we? :)

The rules as ever:

1. Take interesting pic.

2. PP it or not.

3. Open this thread.

4. Reply -- inserting your own subject line.

5. Upload your pic(s).

6. Hit "Post".

7. Participate in the thread by responding to others' posts.

Come on -- you can do it!!!

Cheers, geoff

I'm currently in Kavieng, New Ireland -- the next island along from my usual abode in Vunakabi, East New Britain.

On Tuesday I met Ben Sisia, one of the last of the old time Malagan carvers -- that is, he carves totems (for want of a better word) in the Malagan tradition of the Nalik area in New Island.

The last Malagan carver I knew personally died in 1975 without a successor; his two sons who (traditionally) should have followed him became teachers. His grandson, who might have taken it up, died at an early age. Fortunately, Ben is training his son.

About three-quarters of the image area -- I cropped from the left and from the top and bottom a little.

Unfortunately, the light was low so I had to shoot wide open which made for too shallow a depth of field to show both eyes sharp -- always a weakness in a portrait, I feel, since we are hard wired to look at the eyes and one eye out of focus is distracting.

Cheers, geoff

After a month of nondescript hazy blue skies, a cold front came in and some decent skies resulted:

I've been playing with my macro lens in the garden yesterday.

Here are some of the results.

The photo was posted on the SILENCE challenge and ended up at the bottom of competition (I think 160 out of 214)

It could be wrong title - I call it "OMEN', or it could be just bad shot.

I hope to learn what went wrong with photo I like

Or maybe just the wrong challenge? I think it's a lovely picture. The only thing I might comment on is that the very modern spotlight detracts a little from the charm of the subject.

Nice use of the fisheye. I'm still trying to get to grips with this lens.

Yes pale humid southern european ( Foschia in Italian) skies are a pain.

I have almost given up on getting a good picture of The Shard. Ive tried looking at Google images to see how other people are photographing it and I notice that most images show the building as part of the wider urban landscape. I think the real problem is that I don't like the architecture very much so no empathy/feel for the building. What I do like is the way it's integrated into the railway station at London Bridge so that's what I've decided to shoot this week. And St Paul's of course - just because it's London.

Here are a couple of others too from this week posted elsewhere in the forum. It's been a week of trying to master some of the basics around night photography.

The first two were taken today in Fremantle. The parrot shot was taken a couple weeks ago when when it showed up at my back door. He was very tame and obviously someone's pet. The last was of the rainbow was taken with my iPhone, didn't have my OMD with me, hope no one minds if I show it here.

Nice work, Dan, and a nice bit of fun with the iPhone rainbow composition.

Cheers, geoff

Wouldn't worry about the dof being too shallow, looks okay to me, at least you got the front eye. Nice shot.
