Hello,

Here I am again for a short visit (still completely overwhelmed) with work and a 'grand bonjour' to Jarrell. Some of a short visit to the town this afternoon in black and white, the weather was to dull and gray so I preferred to monotone or use b&w. Also two from last week, had to take pictures for my job near to France and jumped over to Lille there for about an hour. Hope that you enjoy them and that I will find some more time to spend here in the future.

You stuff is so good! I especially like the cafe scene, the 1st
group chess pic, and of course, the dog pic. Did you use PS to blur
the background in the poochie pic? The whole thing is very soft,
which makes it really a great shot. Bravo sir!

Hi Steve,

THanks very much for your great and encouraging words, really appreciated. And I don't know what poochie means (English is my third language), if it must be the dog than my answer is no, the dog was taken behind the front window of the car and I tried to avoid the reflections but there is some of the sky and the water in front of the car. Didn't blur also the others, except in the first I accentuated the blur a bit. I used a Nikkor f1.4 lens and most of the pictures where taken at 1.4 so that caused the blur of the backgrounds.
With very kind regards,

Dirk

For you newer members that may not know Dirk, he lives in Belgium, speaks a ton of languages, shoots with a Fuji s2 pro and Nikon lenses and is about the nicest guy around.

Now...

Let me see if I can pick a favorite from these...:)

As usual, with your work it is hard to do, but I really like the swan in flight. It is beautifully lit and you did a good job panning with the bird. The lighter blue area behind the swan seems to counter balance it.

The "cafe" photo is very good also. When I see pictures like that I always wonder what the people are talking about.

I've been studying the chess boards to see who is losing badly. My grandson always wants me to play when he visits me. I always lose. The doorway with a partial view to the outside is good. I wonder where it is.
I have two questions for you, if you don't mind.
What type metering do you favor, i.e. spot, matrix etc.
How many new lenses have you bought lately...:)

Jarrell
Hi Jarrell,

Oh a ton of languages, only Dutch, French, English and German. Learned also Latin and Greek at school and understand a bit of Spanish. Several times I met people who where fluently speaking between 10 and 20 languages. Thanks for the very kind explanation about me, you're to good. I also like the swan very much, I became addicted to their beauty and in photographing them, I made hundreds of shots and will continues photographing them in the coming months, here are already a few hundred ( http://www.pbase.com/dievee/the_swan_lake ).

Aha I'm also always wondering what they are talking about and sometimes (I know it's not done but sometimes stronger than myself) I try to intercept a discussion. Here is another one from the same café and look at the guy on the left how he enjoys relaxing there, he looks so happy.

Oh and chess, I loved to play that in the past, with periods I was playing chess for hours each day, it's one of the most interesting and beautifull games in the world, I really could enjoy the beauty of situations on the board. Your grandson must be a good player. There where many tables at that place where people where playing chess, lovely, here you see the entry to that place, a very beautifull place I must say.

The doorway with the partial view outside is a part of a gallery located in a super very old house (around the Middle Ages I think) in Antwerp, and in the second picture you can see the well known gallery owner, Adriaan Van Raemdonck.

No problems with questions of course Jarrell, here I go, well I use always matrix but I correct a lot in under- and overexposing, I know the weakness of the metering now and now in which situations I have to correct (and I always can check it on the lcd screen if I want of check out the histogram but mostly I have no time for that). For example for photographing the white swans on water that's almost black I have to underexpose around -2 or -2,5 EV .

Oh lenses, well, well, well, I've bought the 70-200 AFS VR Nikkor (superb lens but it eats batteries), the 5Omm f1.4 and the 35-70 f2.8.

Next week I think I will buy the FC105 (with defocus control) f2 (I tried one two weeks ago and love it), and the next will be the 80-400 VR Nikkor (need that one for continuing my swan series, they are at a to big distance in the coming months). So Jarrell, glad to speak to you on the net and don't forget to phone me if you ever must come to Belgium, I would love to prepare some great visits for you and don't forget the food here is excellent (and the many beers and wine to). Wish you and yours all the very best.

No talk here but only joy...

Here they play chess...

Dirk

i'll bet the people images would be as gorgeous in color as they were in B&W. You have an excellent eye. And those are great faces. Why would you break away to post for us? Golly, go back and shoot!

Bah. My color bias always wants to see what the baseline color image looked like. Pay no attention to my niggling on the monochrome...

Theyre all fantastic images, but I like the first portrait and the cafe shot the best from the b&w's. This might be a daft question but what is the camera?

Hi Ed,

Well I agree and it depends on my mood if I turn them in monotone or b&w and sometimes it's very hard to decide which I prefer. And thanks for your very kind comment, I was spending all my free time the last weeks in photographing swans but will make some time soon for photographing people again, I knew where I can find other great faces and caracteristic heads.
Here is one of them in color for you.

Hi Louise,

Thanks so much I'm always glad if I find some time to jump in this forum. And I'm passionated in making pictures of swans, I was only focussing on them for many weeks now, if interested here are already a lot of results: http://www.pbase.com/dievee/the_swan_lake

Effective in color. But I think I would prefer all of them in b&w. They have that certain something!

I absolutely LOVE the image with him in color, the background in that - hmmm - Vermeer grey. LOVE IT. But I often find myself in the minority on that discussion, a lot of folks still love black and white. I don't dislike it, I just think it's often used as a crutch. You do a great job with it, better than most. For a lot of people B&W amounts to a selective removal of information from an image that they didn't think through properly to begin with. That your picture works in both - perhaps you do have a famous ancestor...

You also engaged with your subjects, or at least it looks like you did. that's the hardest part of shooting people who aren't great friends. I still have to fight the urge to use a long lens and lurk furtively in the shadows.

Hi Marek,

Thanks again and as you can see it's mostly very difficult for me to choose between color or b&w or there must be a battle of ugly colors in a picture than I choose of course for b&w (clothes colors are regularly awfull against the surrounding colors).
With very kind regards,

Dirk
