Hi,

I recently bought Nikon's D7100 camera with a 18-105 mm kit lens. I don't find the lens "astonishing" and I'm still looking for the perfect combination for portrait and landscape (the equivalent of Canon's 24-105 on a full frame camera). Zoom or prime lens? Which zoom (I can accept Sigma)? Which prime lens?

If you guys can recommend a list of recommended lenses as the one Nikon is continuously updating for D800, that would be great. Here's the one for D800:
  • New: AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED ($746.95)
  • New: AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR ($2,696.95)

Cheers,
AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is the one. You just need to make sometimes few steps back, that's it.

At 24-105 f/4 equiv on DX is 16-70 f/2.8. There is no such thing available. Note that Canon crop sensor shooters do not have a 16-70 f/2.8 either.

So you have to compromise. Either compromise on aperture or on focal length.

If you decide to compromise on aperture, the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS is good. Photozone.de just did a review of it. The Nikon 16-85 f/3.5-5.6 is two stops slower than f/2.8 on the long end, but is very sharp (but horrid bokeh).

Compromising on focal length means splitting the focal length in two. The Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 and Tokina 50-135 f/2.8 is one such pair. The Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS and the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 OS is another. For Nikon you need the very expensive 17-55 f/2.8 but there is no compariable 50-150 zoom in Nikon's lineup.

You can also get the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 (or Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 OS) and then get a WA lens like the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 or Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 or Tokina 12-24 f/4).

Lots and lots of choices. If you want us to narrow it down further for you, you need to tell us your budget, what you shoot, in what light and at what distance.

I have over 20 lenses and each serve a different purpose (some overlapping purposes to be sure).

Good luck.

just about every nikon, sigma, tamron, and tokina lens can be a recommended lens for the d7100. just depends on what you're trying to achieve and how much you want to spend.

i think the 18-105 kit lens is a wonderful lens.

You might find the Nikon 16-85 f3.5-5.6G VR ED AF-S DX ( 24-127.5 equiv) worth a look. I now use FF but found this to be a great lens on my old D300.

Hmmm...

I would get the 80-400mm but if money is not an issue go ahead for the 800mm.

For portraits I think you would like to use the 135mm dc or what it is called it has a control for out of focus blur.

If money is not an issue get the 13mm prime, ;) if money is not a problem...

For all around zoom to be used in a 35mm equivalent get the 24-70mm good glass.

Hopefully It helped =)

Ok, here it goes. For DX only.

Zooms

Ultra wide:

Sigma 8-16

Tokina 11-16 f2.8

Standard:

Sigma 18-35

Sigma 17-50 OS HSM F2.8

Nikon 16-85 (if you want to stay with Nikon)

Nikon 17-55 (old and now surpassed by third party lenses but if you want to stay with Nikon...)

Tele (no real distinction needed anymore between DX and FX):

Sigma 50-150

Sigma 70-200

Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and f4

Primes:

No wide angle primes are good enough or even available. The game starts at 24mm I believe, which is the 35mm equivalent on DX. Go for a

24mm Prime

35mm prime

60mm Prime (portrait equivalent of a 85mm FX lens)

85mm prime (the Nikon f1.8 version or Sigma's f1.4)

Don't know enough about Macro.

Thanks for your input, I'm going to use some of your recommendations. Money is always an issue (that's the reason why I did not go for a full frame considering the overall price with lenses) but I'm ready to invest on good quality lenses for my D7100. I want to shoot portraits (mainly) and some locations. Two weeks ago I was at the Auschwitz - Birkenau concentration/extermination camp and shot the location with the 18-105 kit lens. Results were good but they could have been better (camera settings, lens quality?).

Do a search on this beat to death topic.
The topic may have been beaten into a grease spot, but anything resembling a list of "recommended" lenses, similar to the various lists of "lenses for the D800" is conspicuous by its absence. So the OP's question remains unanswered.

Of course, part of the problem is the division between the Wide Angle Warlocks and the Telephotophiles.

The Wide Angle Warlocks bemoan the lack of really wide primes for DX, and are mostly interested in those zooms that go down to 16 or 14 or 10mm - and if someone wants to shoot longer than 50mm or even 35mm, that's what changing lenses to a telephoto is for. What they hate is the idea of switching lenses at the 24mm mark. They do a lot of zooming in the range of about 10mm to either side of that.

The Telephotophiles, on the other hand, don't care so much about focal lengths wider than 24mm, but instead wish that there were DX primes in the portrait-telephoto range of 55 to 70mm beyond just a few macro lenses. With zooms, they are fine with starting at 24mm or even 28mm at the wide end but want 70mm or 85mm or 105mm or 120mm at the long end before having to change lenses. What they hate is the idea of switching lenses at the 50 or 55mm mark. They do a lot of zooming in the range of about 15mm to either side of that.

A 16-85mm f/4 would make both sides happy, but recommendations for other zoom lenses to go on The List would flounder on disagreements as to whether they'd be too short, or not wide enough.

(Disclosure: I'm in the Telephotophile tribe)
