The last of Olympus' DSLRs apparently are finished.

http://www.getolympus.com/us/en/digitalcameras/slr/e-5.html

The E-5, now the only one listed, is completely out of stock. Amazon only has 3 left. It doesn't say anything about more on the way like other items do.

I really thought by now Oly would have come up with a couple of more for us with 4/3 lenses. I like the OMD but I like my 50-200 2.8 that there is just no comparable lens out there and it doesn't work on the m4/3 cameras.

If someone else posted, I apologize, but searched and didn't come up with anything.

The E-5 has been out of stock at Olympus America for several months now. Aamzon often just leads to other retailers. Check with the various on-line retailers for availability. It has been listed at B&H, Adorama, Samy's and other places continuously.

I'd expect stocks to run low or run out just before they release a new DSLR. They don't want to be left holding a lot of E-5 when the latest greatest comes out. They'd have to discount all those E-5 and take a loss on the MSRP. That happened with the E-3 when they released the E-5.

Not sure this is relevant but in past week I had the opportunity to go to two retailers here that sell high end DSLR's and neither had any Olympus stock whatsoever and haven't for some time. Plenty of offerings from Nikon, Canon, Sony and to a lesser extent Fuji. In fact even in their P&S and Compact stocks very little from Oly. I think the new cameras they have in the pipeline had better be sublime to regain selling ground.

indications are there is something in the pipeline... But those who know just what it don't seem very talkative. (still miss Bill's 'not saying')

So, another stopgap DSLR, a mirrorless 4/3 body, a PD-AF enabled m43, or a hybrid? Place your bets! :) We should know before Christmas.

Used E-5s on EBay are selling like hot cakes, when they are listed, usually at full asking price BIN and at least 30-40 bids on auction. I had to buy my gently used one from a forum member in a private sale.

I used the manual focus recently to shoot the moon and it worked well with my panasonic 70-300 lens. Is there anyway to change the focus assist so it is 5x instead of 10x?

I think I could get it in focus quicker if it didn't zoom so much.

thanks,

Bryce

If it's a Panasonic body, no the 50-200 won't AF, and neither will any of the Sigma lenses.

I use the 50-200 regularly on my OMD. M43 has nothing like it right now, except for the expensive Panny 35-100 F2.8, which in my opinion is a bit less sharp than the ZD 50-200, let alone comparing it to the ZD 35-100. I also use my ZD 7-14, ZD 8FE, 4/3 PL25, ZD 35-100 and ZD 70-300. AF is pretty good with the PL25 and 70-300, and slower (1.5-2 sec) but consistent and very accurate on the other ZD's. The grip is essential for use with the larger lenses. With it, handling is pretty good. Without the grip, handling with the larger lenses is very clumsy.

I will say that ZD AF on my original EP1 was a joke, except for the PL25 which AF'd very well on it.

Curiously enough, if you have an OMD or later Pen, the non SWD 50-200 is the one you want. The SWD version bangs around a lot when AF'ing, the SWD motor doesn't like all that start and stop action.

I'm using the original 50-200 with the OMD body. All the firmware is uptodate. Does the Panasonic lens adapter have anything to do with it not focusing right?

I dont have an OMD I have a GH2, so things are going to be a little different to organise

If Im to MF I first have to set up my focus box where I want it
with a GH2 you can move it around with the four way or just use the touch screen

Once you do that, when you touch the focus ring it will zoom on that area

I could of course just have it set in the middle (default) and focus/recompose
but I guess you are operating off a tripod

I guess the thing is, you have to be of mind to choose the focussing box before you shoot, so you already know your composition
thanks,

Bryce

I visited Olympus Australia home site 26/07/13 to get price data for insurance cover of my lenses and see that for; Standard - All out of stock

Pro - All out of stock

Super- All Available from retailers

E-5 Body - available from retailers

Is this any sign for the future of e-xxx series ??

I would hope that Olympus has something to replace the E-5. I would love to buy a more modern version of the E-5 with the following:
  1. At least 20MP
  2. Full HD video (1080p) @ 60 fps
  3. Mirrorless
  4. EVF of the VF-4 (2.36 million dots), or even better like the one in the upcoming Lumix GX7 (2.76 million dots)
Last night I was looking at pictures taken with the E-5 and the Zuiko lenses. WOW! Those Zuiko lenses are sweet!

That would be a sweet camera gear setup with Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds. :)
