I appreciate they're similar (aside from toning) - but, 1st process has exaggerated the eyebrows, 2nd has exaggerated the lips.

Which, if any, do you prefer. Any other tips or criticism welcome.

Without reading your description my preference went to the first image. After reading your description, it's a little tougher, but I still prefer the tone of the first image. Lovely image btw.

Tough choice since I like them both, but if I had to pick one it would be the first one. I think the eyes draw you in and the lips are nicely defined but beautifully softened around the edges.

I vote 2nd. Attention stays within the eyes-lips triangle.
Now that you mention it I also like that triangle and see how appealing it is. Perhaps the tint threw me off a bit since I like the tone of the first.

To me, without a doubt the first. Lovely high key rendition. In excellent balance.

In the second, the lips overbalance the image to the lower, just does not sit well in my eyes. The overbalancing to the lower, seems to me to detract from the natural view of a portrait to seek the eyes, thus, unless deliberately creating a tension, it does not sit right.

The first image is excellent.

Interesting how some find the stronger lips distracting but others adding.

I should have asked (or even posted as greyscale) - to please ignore the toning!

I processed the 2nd image first but decided I didn't like the toning. So, I started again. I thought I chose a similar processing path but later realised the lips & eyebrows were very different in each image.

(Additionally I cleaned up the nostrils a little 2nd pp (1st picture) (it was very dry and dusty, bless her) - Maybe that should be left 'warts and all'?

Anyway, Thank you all, for the replies and feedback. :)

I would go with the first! Eyes without eyebrows are not my catch! ;)

Love the pic anyway!

in this image you have made an abstraction of the girls face so I like the first best as it really makes me focus on those wonderful eyes. but really maintians the abstraction better. In the second you have introduced an off color and some more shadows and now I am looking at the black holes of her nose. yes for me definately number one and by a country mile
