Ok guys and girls. After my last thread about what is wrong with the forums, many chimed in with your advice. I was quite surprised with some of it, but its great to get lots of opinions.

Not to many wanted a rating system, and that I understand, but what did come out of it was that most people just said if you don't like the topic, don't click on it or respond.

Now this is all fine and dandy but not that easy to do when everyone who starts a new thread gives it the stupidest title. So now, I have to either click on it just to see what it is and maybe waste my time and Phil's bandwith, but if I don't, I could be missing something important.

So I will not try to reply to every thread that I feel doesn't have a proper title. I'm not gonna get into weather the thread belongs here or not, cause that is very subjective, but I'm sure everyone will agree that a proper title will go a long way. I know that some people like the surprise aspect, but it just can't be done with a group this large now.

I don't care if people flame me and I don't care if I'm banned, because I am at least trying to make a difference and hope that people support me on this. Just think of how lovely it would be to see a list of 20 threads on the first page and right away you'd know which had family snapshots to share, which had pro's posting their work, which were about people asking for buying decisons or technical help. People... I want to live in this digital world. Thanks for listening.

that if people would use more descriptive subject lines, we would have a better forum. The problem is there is no way to demand it. I guess we could just ignore vague subject threads.

If you want to let a bad thread die, then don't respond to it. If you resist the temptation and don't respond to it, it'll be on the 3rd page in no time where most people will never see it. Your solution will only succeed in keeping the thread at the top of the list, defeating your original intent.

Hey... you're that same guy who keeps posting that pic with different titles and changing your name. Are you hiding something?

I don't mean to be rude, I'm just trying to make the forums better for everyone. If you're a regular contributor, I'm sure you will appreciate this as well.

While I do agre with this somewhat, wouldn't you also agree that its all the off topic threads and some that are ridiculous the ones that always go to 150? People can't help but not reply. And that's fine, I just want to make sure that before I know the thread is about guns and there is a pic posted where little kids are pointing the gun at the camera, I will know to avoid it since none of that interests me.

Kiran

The problem with subject descriptions that is that what you may consider an appropriate subject descirption may not coincide with what I consider appropriate.

Olga

Well... I would think that its not that it has to be appropriate, but that it will be what you wrote about. Maybe it would be good to first write the message, and then put on a title after you saw what you really wrote about. And of coure, if you're gonna attach a picture, then you just say "Pic" or "IMG" in the title and that goes a long away as well.

Kiran

the forums, many chimed in with your advice. I was quite surprised

1) Kiran note the number of responese indicate other folks think the forum is broke, too.

2) Meaningful thread titles and meangful post titles would help a lot...it will even help the folks who regard the forum only as a chance to be anonymously ugly to other folks...

3) It also helps to have a list of posters that you know from experience are useless to you personally - either you know they don't know the field, or they are interested only in being contentious - the "look at me!" posters.

4) So in effect, meaningful thread and post titles, plus a list of useless posters, allow one to self-select the posts one reads - just as you never OPEN email headed "how do get rich without working" or "how to enlarge your whatzis".

(I know, I know - I never OPEN emails from anyone I don't recognize, either) - I'm just trying to give an example.

An interesting subect, tho I spend little time on the Canon SLR forum, or indeed dpreview, any more...It used to be the nicest most informative forum on the net, but the 10D put paid to THAT. I still don't understand why, but it did.

This thread is as off topic as any you have complained about and has become only about you. What you are advocating is censorship based on your own prejudices. What you constitute as off topic someone else may not. It is not up to you to police this forum. If you have complaints, email Phil. Otherwise, just don't participate in the threads you don't like. If you have trouble resisting temptation, then consult a Bible.

The same thing happened when the 1D/D60/1Ds were released. It's just taking a little longer with the 10D. With the attractive price point of the 10D, there are a lot more newbies to photography in general appearing here who need a lot of hand holding. Even that's starting to die down.

I haven't insulted you at all, not even once. All I mentioned was you posting the same picture twice, and both times with titles that did nothing to give us any idea about what you were trying to post about. If there is anyone lonely here, its you who has to post the same picture twice and the only way you could showcase it off was to make it sound like you had some hot chick wearing next to nothing. That's pretty sick if you ask me considering what you really had to show was your little girl.

I'm gonna stop here just so that it doesn't like I'm the one being nasty. But tell you what.... a little bit of restraint on your part will go a long way.

... so many people feel a need to police this forum. The policing threads waste as much space as the useless OT posts lately. You are a part of the problem in my humble opinion. If you don't like the forum the way it is start your own, don't try to rewrite this one. It's not yours to "save"...

I don't think there is much subjective to the appropriateness of posting in the CANON DSLR forum:
  • ohh, I am excited by my new printer
  • Ohh, look at me, I have a lot of cables
  • what are you doing for hard drive storage
  • where can I get a good deal on a CF card
  • OT: anything
There are other places for those postings and it is selfish and a big waste to post here.

Why deprive people of your printer excitement by posting in the Canon forum rather in the PRINTER forum where people go for that info.
So I will not try to reply to every thread that I feel doesn't have
a proper title. I'm not gonna get into weather the thread belongs
here or not, cause that is very subjective,

So by your logic, anyone should post anything about any topic and no one should comment about it?

I agree that it is Phil's forum - but it is also a community

Equipment: two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun

... when the rules are violated the one that made the rules should do the enforcing and correction. As long as the owner of this forum allows it to run wild it is not my, nor your place to fix it. We either suffer through it or leave and play elsewhere. Posting policing garbage like this thread is as much off topic and useless as the other trash that floats the good stuff away so fast. Simple as that...
So by your logic, anyone should post anything about any topic and
no one should comment about it?

I agree that it is Phil's forum - but it is also a community
As for the community, most people don't make up their own laws or go around enforcing the laws of their land in their real life community. What makes this one any different. The general population has an obligation to follow the rules. The enforcers take care of the ones who don't live up to that obligation. And so it should be here...

In reference to the above paragraph, I wonder if the ones who try to police the forum and "fix" things are also the ones who call 911 every time their neighbor passes gas?

Repeat thread?

Just one small part of thread is repeated (link to picture “Watercolor Me”). This is almost a completely different post.

Actually, the Content of my gallery has changed, in displayed pictures and resolution of same.
Also, the text has different content.

Only the photographic subject is the same.
