Is it possible to "downgrade" to an earlier firmware release using the "reset" function?

I noticed that there were several reports of an increased "whirring noise" coming out of the 18-55 mm lense after the upgrade (on this and other forums). Have not performed the upgrade yet but trying to play it safe...I do understand that the firmware upgrade is a "one way" process, and normally you cannot load and older version (which surprises me - even Microsoft allows you to "downgrade" to windows 7...). Does the "reset" function in one of the menus reset the body and lens to the original versions? If not, is there another way to fool the camera into going back to its pristine condition?

Thanks!

I don't think that any camera makers allow you to downgrade firmware . Faulty firmware maybe correctable with a further upgrade but sometimes faulty installations require returning to a service department.

Yes, if you run there's always the danger of falling over. Better to keep still.

FQTOQA, there is a great wisdom in this but not everyone is destined to run. I find myself quite happy crawling sometimes...the windows XP for example is good enough :) but then the threat of "no support" in 2014 forces me to start looking into windows 8 with a great degree of apprehension...(LR5 also!)

In my mind one of the objectives behind any type of firmware aside from the obvious is not to degrade any of the existing functions. From the anouncement today it appears that the video function on X-Pro1 was impacted. It happens, and I am sure that Fujifilm will deal with it promptly. Obvious problems are easy to fix - I worry more about the subtle ones.

From the comments today from X-E1 owners I can add to my concern of possible increase of "whirring" noise intensity some cases of "camera freezes" and possibly cases of out of focus shots. It could all be cases of coincidence, these reports may have a tendency to mushroom (and I may contribute to this...) but while trying to maintain a positive attitude I still wonder whether the upgrade would be worthwile if the way back to an earlier firmware version is only through an authorized dealership.

So my original qiestion still stands...

jacob

I can't answer your question about the reset function, but wouldn't see any harm in trying it. My guess is that it simply resets to factory settings, deletes your custom settings, etc. Doubtful that it would go to the firmware level and reinstall an older firmware.

Justified apprehension in the case of Win 8 - better find a copy of Win 7 while you still can... LR 5 has not been a problem for me.

bowportes,

You are probably right about the reset function; the card port is probably the only access to the firmware.

We can try a reverse engineering from the DAT file ! BUT this can damage the boot procedure of the Camera. Do you want to be the tester or do you prefer to wait fix from fuji? :-)

Not to change the subject but we just bought a new desktop about two weeks ago.

Ordered it from Dell because we could still get one with Windows 7.

Cost a couple dollars more than the identical computer with Windows 8 but worth it.

Ed,

Funny you should mention this. Had multiple conversation with the IT guys in the office this week. They try to convince me that the Win 8 is somewhat faster and would make more sense if one intends to hang on to the PC for a while like I usually do. The weird looking user interface can be overcome by simply downloading the so-called "Classic Shell" - makes it look like Win 7 or even somewhat like Win XP. Dell has official documents stating that customerts are entitled to downgrade to Win 7 if they wish.

Hope you enjoy yours! I don't mind the change in subject - this topic has exhaused itself anyway

I see some people are picking on the smallest of things that may be even imagined, vs the real huge benefits the latest firmware provides.

I suppose the I.T. people are right. The one thing better about Widows 8 is that it will be supported longer that Windows 7 but I've read so many negative comments about it that 7 seemed like a safer choice for me.

I guess that I just don't have an adventurous nature.
