I realize a few folks are frustrated with the current lack of availability of GR's. However, this will be a photographic tool you'll have for at least two years or more so waiting a month or so shouldn't be the end of the world. By comparison, I have a good friend who's had an order in for his new Leica M for 6 months and he's still not sure when he'll have it in hand. I realize these are two totally different cameras in terms of function and price, but I think I'd be more frustrated if I was waiting for a $7,000 camera versus the GR at $800.

In the meantime...stay calm, shoot with what you have, remember the GR by itself is not going to improve your vision or eye for taking photos and most important don't forget that photography is supposed to be fun :)

Cheers,

Ned

Hello Ned

Indeed words of wisdom but I have to ask : why two years ?

I expect to have mine for a longer time .. unless they come with a version with the option of adding a good EVF ;)

yes , as I said words of wisdom

Hi Harold,

Thanks. I used two years as a somewhat arbitrary milestone just to point out that you'd have the camera far longer than the present wait for it.

However, two years is the typical life-cycle for the GR series so assuming the next one will be even better, I'll upgrade right away like I did from the IV to the GR :)

Regards,
Ned

Beautiful photo in your post.

I haven't been waiting long but it still feels like forever. :) I'll more than likely be one to use it past the two year mark. I still use the original GRD. My D100 was replaced by a D7000. I tend to pick a camera and stick with it for a while.

I just picked two years to make a point, but I also tend to use my cameras longer like you. I'm still using my GRD IV for its macro feature...and I still have quite a few film cameras that I keep in working order like my Pentax K1000 and LX and one of my M4's :)

The LX was a beautiful cameras . I can honestly say that I have enjoyed all my Pentax cameras from the Me super , my first camera ever to , of course , the Pentax 67 my personal Pentax favorite

Getting nostalgic feedbacks just thinking about them

2 years, not for me, maybe one of the last cameras I will buy.

Ha, tell me about it.

I'd been waiting for it to come on regular stock at Amazon for a while - then when I finally saw it in-stock via an Amazon third-party seller at $50 more than SRP, I decided to go for it.

Only to find out a few hours later that my order was canceled, they weren't willing to ship to my freight-forwarder in NYC. (I live in the Philippines)

But - the great news was, a few days later, I found out that the local Pentax dealer here in Manila had them in-stock, and at a cheaper price too. (Two rare things here - we usually get stuff much much later here, and with the exception of Olympus, almost all gear here are significantly more expensive vs the US)

And the other bonus was, when I went to get my GR, it included the limited red ring and red strap. Though I think I prefer just using it with the black ring and no strap, LOL.

But if anyone were thinking of getting something else, because they couldn't wait - I would urge you to wait, it definitely is worth it. Especially if you've loved using any of the GRD's. (I almost pulled the trigger on an X100s when I couldn't get a GR, but I am definitely glad I waited)

As a relatively small name in camera manufacturing, Ricoh didn't have as many stockists nor distributors as other more known brands.

Making an exceptionally good camera (kudos to Ricoh, really), selling it at a very affordable price, making all other choices almost irrelevant, and making just enough of cameras to balance the perception of extraordinary demand, suits Ricoh's business style, builds the certain perception of a brand and also minimises the sales risk because cameras are sold even before they're manufactured.

I suspect this will be ongoing strategy for (almost) all their future products.

Seems every now and then the GR's in stock Ricoh must been cranking then up as fast as they could to keep up with demand.
Hi Rain,

I agree, I think Ricoh's initial production plan was probably based on historical sales data and most recently the GRD IV. The GR's success and demand far exceeded this plan and I imagine they're trying to catch up without sacrificing quality or taking short cuts which is a good thing for any customer that's new to Ricoh cameras. I'm sure they know how important first impressions are.

Joel,

This message didn't apply to you since you already have yours :)

However your point just supports my belief that waiting a little while for a camera you'll use for years is not a bad thing.
