Sigma 18-35mm 1.8

Usually I'm the slow upgrader, waiting for plenty of user reviews and such before I buy, but this time I jumped straight in.

Only one of the online stores here in Sweden had the lens in stock, and it had only two copies when I phones them so it was either now (just before my summer holiday) or perhaps not until late this autumn.

I received on Saturday and have played around with it a little. Here are two test shots:

35 mm, f/1.8:

18mm, f/5.6:

I'm going to let this lens replace my previous Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX and my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4. I've found that I use those lenses less and less, since they don't perform so well wide open.

Thanks for the samples David! If I may be so bold- what does this lens cost in Sweden? Did they have any in Nikon mount? I'm really chomping at the bit for mine to arrive in the US from B&H! PS- the close focusing looks pretty sharp @ 35mm from the looks of that video card!

I paid 6490 SEK, which at the current rates equals pretty much £650 or $1,000. And it looks like they have run out of Nikon mounts, while they have (apparently) four Canon copies in total at different locations in Sweden. The quoted number of two was perhaps only their webshop, as opposed to their physical shops.

Great samples. The electronic board texts are very sharp across the frame and the distance shot is impressive at 5.6, even the borders and corners.

One can actually see objects in the house windows quite clearly.

I was actually eyeing (and bidding on another lens), lost the bid and am thankful for that.

Will instead save and buy this one end of this year or early next (not that far away). Am after a high quality normalish zoom for general events etc. This looks the fine candidate.

Unless of course the expected Nikon 16-85 f4 is stellar also, which it would have to be to take precedence over this.

The 18-35 will be the master of the night time and the 16-85 F4 will be a perfect day tourist/always on lens. Right? :) So there is space for both of them for sure

Not to mention the hidden cat I came across while viewing the image close-up... it's kind of a "Where's Waldo." Ah, I see this has already been discussed in another thread!

David, I asked you in another thread about the oof background... I'd really like to get your thoughts on this, especially as compared with your 30mm Sigma. Thanks in advance.

Have you done any PP on these two images? OOC JPEG or RAW?

Thanks.

Haha =)

Sorry, must have forgotten to answer that. I'm not at home right now so can't make the comparison. But I've added a few more shots to my short review so you can have a look yourself: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3521358

These are raws developed in Lightroom. Basically no edits. Contrast at 25 which is my default setting and moderate, fine detail sharpening.

Would you mind and be able to post a couple of RAW's (or for sizing for web RAW direct to JPEG, no adjustment), - wide open, close and far, stopped down, close and far? And one extra shot with wide open and very close to a subject, to show the OOF areas clearly i.e. positioning subject such that some OOF areas are close and some far? Please?

Much thanks!

B&H just changed my "expected delivery" from 31 July to 15 August for the Nikon mount

:-(

I feel your frustration! Once you decide on getting something, you really want it yesterday. =)

Anyone recieved the Nikon mount version yet?

Just ordered one from B&H (canon mount)... back-ordered until later this month. Looking forward to getting it in my hands.
