Just bought Elinchrom 600S and 1200s. The 600S has a hook/spring that holds the flash tube. But I found that the hook/spring that holds the 1200S flash tube seems missing. Or is it a different set up than the 600s. Can anyone look at theirs and let me know. Thank you so much!

Also, after trying out a few flashes at full output, the flash tube on the 1200S begins to darken at where the contacts are. Is this normal?

Julian,

I don't know the specifics of the 1200s. I have a pair of 300s units.

I'm guessing that the "hook/spring" you describe is the wire that wraps around the flash-tube and carries the high voltage flash trigger. If the flash works, and the tube isn't loose, I'd say you're fine.

I also noticed that the tubes on my flashes darkened some at the electrodes after I started using them. I think this is normal.

Hi, Duncan,

See these pic of the 600s and the 1200s.

And since the flash tube on the 1200s started to darken right after a few flashed I am just concerned that I am getting a defective 1200S.

Sorry, these are those pics of 600S and 1200S where the 1200S clamp seems to be broken.

I cant comment on the broken hook issue

but darkening of the flash tube is normal with use...

I have some older heads (also elinchrom)

The darkening is due to metalic atoms being vaporised from the surface of the electrodes and condensing on the glass of the flash tube..

Thanks, Geoff.

At least that is 1/2 of my problems solved.

I just want to make sure all these are normal before I commit myself to it.

julian,

I have 2 Style 300s's and an old Prolinka 250. One of my Styles is up overhead with a snoot on it, and I'm in the middle of shooting some jewelry and don't want to move it.

I checked the other style 300s and the Prolinka. They both show evidence of the same clip assembly as the pictures you posted. The 300 has the full clip, minus the little spring I can see on your 600. My Prolinka is completely missing it's clip. It has the hollow plastic insulator that the trigger wires come out of (where the clip would be mounted, if there was one.)

It looks to me like the tip of one end of the clip on your 1200 broke off, and so the spring was lost. It also looks like what's left of the clip is still supporting the flash tube, since it wraps a large part of the way around the flash tube.

If you're really worried about it, get your supplier to send you a new flash tube, or send the light back for a replacement. I don't think it really matters, though. I got my old Prolinka used, and have used it for a year now, with no clip at all. I've never had a problem with it.
