Why are S110 pix underexposed with flash and zoom?

I just got an S110 to replace my S95 and I'm still figuring out its quirks. One thing I've noticed is that images are severely underexposed when shot in Program mode with the flash on and any degree of zoom is used, even if I lock the exposure first. With no zoom (i.e. full wide angle), flash pix are properly exposed. I can't find any mention of this in the manual, though I could have easily missed it among all the footnotes. I'm using the latest firmware. Any idea what's going on? Thanks.

Hi Lautman: You seem to be implying that you are zooming in beyond the effective range of the very limited capabilities of the on-board flash.

‘P’ mode may not be the best option if this is the case. You may be best served by using pure ‘Auto’ but expect the ISO to be raised to meet the correct exposure criteria.

You can set ISO to Auto in P mode.

Thanks. I guess that was it, though it's still a little confusing. I would think an object 5 feet away that's properly exposed with the flash at 24mm would remain properly exposed at 120mm. It takes surprisingly little zoom before the flash loses effectiveness. On my S95 the flash is effective over the entire zoom range (for objects that are within range of the flash anyway).
