Other than the price, I like it. Now that you have told us about Ken,

I will have to re-think my opinion.

I think most people are well served to simply do the opposite of whatever Ken says/posts.

If you like Ken, you like what Ken likes. He tends to make controversial, overgeneralized statements about equipment. It keeps his site traffic high. With that aside, the Coolpix A has gained some early followers. I'll be watching the price until it hits my range (under $500) as a refurb or clean used.

Very informative post, thanks.

Let me guess: "This is the best DX pocket camera ever made by anyone."

Kind of like saying, you're the best wife I have.

Other KR 'bests':

"The Nikon D800 is the world's best camera..."

"The LEICA M9 is the world's best camera..."

"The Mamiya 7 is the world's best camera..."

"The Canon S100 is the world's best camera..."

His opinions on two "virtually identical" cameras:

Kenny on the Ricoh GR:

"Personally, I don't see any reason for this camera, but that's just me. Hobbyists love to throw all sorts of money at gadgets like this, so don't let me stop you.

If I want a small take-everywhere camera, I prefer my iPhone 5, which has colors and tonal range superior to any DSLR or compact digital camera I've ever used at their default settings.
"

Kenny on the Coolpix A:

"I really like the Coolpix A. It's only a point and shoot, and I love point and shoots, especially when this is the world's fastest handing point and shoot, complete with fantastic technical, artistic and low-light image quality.

Image quality is at least as good as a DSLR, and so is speed and ease of shooting. With the Coolpix A being so good, I wonder when Nikon will introduce a version with a Nikon F (SLR) lens mount.

Far better than an SLR, the Coolpix A is silent from more than a foot away. Concert and on-set photographers, this may be your camera.
"

Summary

So the GR is pointless, he'd rather have his iPhone, but the Coolpix A is fantastic and perfect for concert photography. In other words, Kenny is a moron.

Rockwell's best quote in that review:

"The RX-1 is a camera best ignored if you're serious about great photographs. The RX-1 is for people in the small-p*nis club who can't afford LEICA."

So, is he saying poorly endowed men buy Leicas, unless they can't afford to, then they buy an RX-1?? Rockwell loves him some Leica, so....is he just a member of the club or the president too??

Better quote him extensively on what makes the GR better too, no?

You can say a lot of things about Ken, but one thing is for sure, there are plenty of cameras he does not like. When he compliments a camera, that is a special thing and usually for good reason.
Special? Sure. In a Dana Carvey / Church Lady way.

I doubt it. It is made in Japan. Even at end of life I predict price at $700-800 but at that time you will probably want to buy the follow up model

I trust Steve Huff more. When he said a camera is good he is usually right

Ken Rockwell takes dip-waddery to a whole new level.

The guy posts whatever mishmash he can post that will get you to his site and possibly click on one of his advertiser links which will then earn him revenue.

He doesn't care about the validity of his post content. He cares about web traffic. Whatever will produce web traffic and possible "click throughs" is his end game.

...which is why it is so funny when someone here quotes ken to support their opinion.

It is true, OP claims the camera is too sharp and makes the pores on Karl Malden's face look like part of the Grand Canyon (this is my interpretation of his skin comments in Fuji forum today).
