I have canon xl2 with 3.4-10mm lens and I want to buy panasonic GH3. Can anyone show me how I can use the canon lens on the GH3. It is feasible in the first place which I believe it should though I may not have the remedy yet. For instance if I have to use an adapter or converter which one should I use and where can I get to buy it? I really love this lens due to its wideness and sharpness. All contributions will be very much appreciated.

You'll probably have better luck if you post in the Micro Four Thirds Talk forum. Also, you should probably mention that the Canon XL2 is a video camera.

I thought maybe he was a rich Nigerian who needs help moving his millions out of the country, but needs someone to pay the "fees" first and then you can split the money.

E-mails in all caps usually say that sort of stuff. :)

A 3.4mm-10mm lens is likely for a sensor that is vastly smaller than u4/3 so the lens would only illuminate a tiny spot in the middle of the frame (It's possible that the cropping modes of the
GH3 would allow a video to be recorded within that spot, but I wouldn't plan on it.

Also, it's likely that the flange distance of the 3.4-10mm lens is considerably shorter than the u4/3 so the adapter would need to be a teleconverter to reach infinity focus.

In a nutshell, you cannot use that lens.

The Canon XL2 has a 1/3" sensor (4.23×3.17mm).

The (micro) Four Thirds sensor is 17.3x13mm. As you can see, quite a bit larger than the XL2 sensor.

Canon lenses designed for the XL2 will not have a sufficiently large image circle to cover the micro43 sensor.

Additionally, the XL2 is a miniDV camcorder, which means, at best, it would be 720x576 or less than half a megapixel. Even it were full HD (1920x1080) it would only translate to about 2.1MP.

Most micro43 cameras today are 16MP, so even if you could mount the lens, and if the image circle was large enough to cover the 4/3 sensor, it is unlikely to look very sharp.

There is a wealth of very good micro43 lenses from Panasonic, Olympus, Sigma and others that will mount and work properly. I suggest you look among them to find something that meets your needs.

PS: Don't shout.

Surprisingly, it would appear that it has quite a long registration distance (29mm). This is probably due to the XL2 being a 3CCD camcorder.

Interesting, well then that's not an issue. Thanks, I didn't figure out what mount the xl's use from a quick search!

3.4 to 10mm on a 1/3 sensor will be pretty close to 14 to 40 mm on m4/3s for a similar angle of view.

Therefore the 12-50mm kit lens should do the job nicely.

could it work with the gh2 crop mode?

I had the use of an xl2 a while ago.. the lens were pretty fast (f1.6?) and could focus really close.

The best solution is to be prepared ahead of time regardless if it is possible or not.

You should contact the camera store where you bought the camera for support or for a faster response use Google to search for adaptors.

I know Black Magic Designs is coming out with a new Cine camera that will use micro four thirds lenses directly in another 60 days and can be pre-ordered now.

I really appreciate your comment it was very much helpful, but the issue is, is there a way I can use the lens ? is there an adapter or converter that i can use, which and where can I get it. Also wich lens can give me equivalent angle of view? once again tanx for your comment.

It would appear that 720p ETC (crop mode) would be very close to the same size as a 1/3" sensor, so that would likely allow the image circle to cover the sensor. Whether one could find an XL bayonet to u4/3 might be trickier.

The crop factor of the XL mount is 7.8, and for the µ4/3 mount it's 2. Even in the ETC mode you would have only about half of the frame illuminated.

Further, you would not be able to control the aperture on the Canon lens.

You best equivalent lens is Panasonic 12-35 f/2.8, that will give about the same angle of view as the canon lens, and has a very high quality. The second option is Olympus 12-50, which is just as wide, and even a little longer on the other end. There are two disadvantages to it: its f-stops are significantly higher, and you will loose a lot of the sensor size advantage. In addition, there will be no image stabilization on the GH2 camera and an Olympus lens.
