I received my 24-70 lens last friday and haven't had a sunny day since.
The images I have on pbase are hand held, flash etc. Images are just
as they came from the 10D. I am hoping with some sun and higher
f-stops, shutter speeds, I will see an improvement in the image quality.
Maybe I was expecting them to be sharper. I have some close-up
pictures made with a 28-135IS, bright sunshine, that are really sharp.
Please critique the images. Thanks.

Looks good to me Charles. I have both lenses, but use the 24-70 the most. it's not as sharp as my 50f1.4 but pretty close.

I presume you want comments on sharpness and such, not on artistic merit and composition, right?

The Mini Cooper looks about right, considering the 24-70 is at its weakest around 50mm (same as the 28-70L was) and f=4.5 is not the sweetest aperture eiter.

The MSU gate (no. 1828) also looks OK to me, given the conditions.

Did you disclose somewhere what kind of in-camera sharpening setting you use on your 10D? I think the images could use a bit more punch, but not necessarily from the lens. What you could really use imho (and every other 10D shooter as well) is a sharpening action like it is available from Fred Miranda and others. We've been discussing these recently here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=5151670

As to the 24-70 L, I was initially disappointed, too. But my third copy is OK (the other two I sold on eBay). Here are some comparisons I shot with my first one: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=4877068

They look fine to me. I did some testing (thanks to Jack Flesher) and compared 3 different lenses and saw some minor differences between them but nothing substantial. I think you need to compare the color contrast of the 28-135 and 24-70 not just sharpness. mark

They look good to me, but maybe a touch of USM would make them more to your taste in sharpness. I always use some on my photos that I'm really happy with.

Charles, the higher contrast on a sunny day will give the appearance of greater sharpness than flat lighting. Think about it - how does USM work (ans: increasing edge contrast).

Stefan,

Thanks so much for your critique. First, the parameter settings I am using
now are Contrast +1, Sharpness +2, Saturation +1 and Color Tone +1.
This lens and the 100-400L are my only "L's". I am pleased with the
100-400, but due to the fact that I had never owned any L lens, I really
didn't know what to expect. I am pleased with my 28-135IS. Hopefully
when the sun comes out I can get a better idea of the lens capabilities.
I still have a few days left before I have to decide to keep it. There is a
good possibility that if I requested a replacement that I would get a
replacement that was worse. Just too much hassle, so I think I might
just keep this copy. Thanks again.

Hm.... I wouldn't have guessed that Sharpness was at +2... looks more like zero to me - but then again, I have never used the 24-70 L on a 10D. It does look sharper on my 1D (but so does every lens).

If these photos are post processed, edited in PhotoShop then I cannot
give an opinion about the quality of the lens.

I thought it would be best to post unprocessed images. I was hoping
for more sharpness without post processing. I suppose I am trying to
use the lens for marco shots, which I should know better. I have images
taken with my 28-135IS at the same focal length as the shots with the
24-70 that are sharper straight from the camera. The shots taken with
the 28-135 were taken in bright sunshine. So far I haven't had very much
sun since I got the 24-70. Thanks.

You should consider buying an external flash. In some of those flower shots you get the shade of the lens in the shot so you might want to consider that.

Nice pictures, great colour and look very sharp. Keep posting!
