Hi,

I picked up a local used D30 to get some relief from the autofocus
in-action of my G2 and I must say (not counting low-light) I'm
pleased. I also love the extra flexibility to now be able to use
something else than ISO 50... :)

Here's some shots from the weekend (28-135 lens) (more at
http://www.kristyandmats.com/public_album/first_pic_d30_may_2003 ):

I'd like to call the first one "Kamakazi bee" :)

What vantage point was that second picture taken from? I'm in Mountain View BTW. I'm heading by your neck of the woods today on my way up to Zebulon's Lounge in Petaluma for a photo shoot tonight.

Cheers, Joe

Congratulations on the D30 - its a classic.

I wondered about your viewpoint on the second photo - were you åaragæiding or what??

The second photo was taken from Mt. Tamalpaias (Mt. Tam). If you never been up there I would really recommend it (on a clear day). You would take the 1 exit off 101 in south Marin and after that there will be signs for Mt Tam.

I guess I should add that the bridge is Richmond bridge, looking from the San Rafael side...

Haha I was thinking it was the Bay Bridge for some silly reason. They are both dual suspension bridges... I just watched a "Modern Marvels" last night on the making of the Bay Bridge. Pretty intersting stuff.

I have been on Mt. Tam before but I don't hang out there that often. I do hit Mt. Hamilton quite frequently though.

Great shots - needle sharp. I have a question. Have these images been sharpened a lot or are they just like that, straight out of the camera? They seem to be a lot sharper than everything I have seen so far for the new Canon D10. I have been thingking of getting a second hand D30 so I'd really like to know. Please comment. Thanks

Hi,

they have been sharpened. They were taken in RAW and converted to JPEG with "low" sharpening (i.e. close to none I guess), and then I did unsharp mask on them (I think Radius:0.9, Amount:140%, Threshold:2). Please note that the first is a 100% crop, i.e. no down sampling at all. The other two are downsampled so they are really not good to judge the cameras sharpening with.

Hope it helps,

Mats

Hi Mat,

To my eyes the strongest image in this group is the first one. The subjects in the other images are very centered, creating static views that don't provide enough to please my eyes.

I really like the first image.

Agreed, the first shot is great. Were you just "at the right place at the right time" or did you know bees buzzing the area?

Do or do not, their is no try.

Hi Stan,

thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I'm kind of a logical guy so the "center" remark is useful to me. I'll try to experiment with more off center pictures.

Thanks. I actually stopped on my way to work, knowing that the light was good and the flowers beautiful. I hoped to see some bees/butterflies to see what the D30 could do instead of the G2. With the G2 I don't think I would have gotten anything more than frustration :)

Did you see the rest of the pictures in the album? There are some other I think it pretty good, but not as sharp.

Mats

Very nice photos Mats.
