What do you think about these Olympus patents?

12-40 f2.8 is good, although I'd prefer 12-50, 12-60, or even 14-70, if it's f2.8-3.5 or f2.8-4.

40-200 f4 is good, although...well, I guess there are size constraints as a f2.8 or f2.8-4 would be too large for the M4/3 philosophy.

We have to accept these limitations. With the better and better high ISOs, we can live with them.

would jump on those 2 lenses in a flash had they become available today

don't need expensive builtin IS from Panny lenses

bring them on Oly!

I think that 40-200 f4 would be an excellent compromise provided that it's compact enough.

The first two would be very nice lenses to have with OM-D.

12-40mm f/2.8:
Supposing they can deliver solid performance (at the level of the Pan 14-45mm?) and a low price this will be very welcome. If it's at the level of the Pan 12-35, but only $100-200 cheaper due to lack of OIS, it's not that interesting.

40-200mm f/4:
I can't get too excited for a slowish mid-telephoto zoom. Sure, 200mm f/4 isn't bad, but 40mm kind of is. If this was 2.8-4 or maybe even 3.5-4.5 I'd be after one for sure, but constant 4? Meh...

Consider that right now, we have an (admittedly weak/cheap) 45-200mm at f/4-5.6, so constant f/4 is only getting a single stop at the long end (and I don't find f5.6->f4 to be very exciting). Compare and contrast to a 12-40mm f/2.8 zoom: current zooms in that range are f/3.5-5.6, so constant f/2.8 offers 2/3 - 2 stops improvement.

It'll still be interesting it has better performance than existing zooms in that range at a modest price, otherwise it's not offering much.

These two lenses are interesting rumors. There are at least two 12-40 patents. One for a F2.8 and a second for a 2.8-4.0. Just over a 3x zoom range should keep the image quality good. Don't have any detils on if it will be a mid-level lens or a high-end zoom. This lens just might be the kit lens for the upcoming above the E-M5 OMD camera.

Olymus recently stated that they are working on telephoto lenses. The 40-200 f4.0 might be what they are talking about. The 5x zoom range makes be think it will be a mid-level lens.

Anyhow, it does look like they will be releasing new lenses this year. I am holding off buying the Panasonic f2.8 lenses until I see what Olympus offers. Which ever ones have the best image quality I will get. I do like f2.8 zoom lenses so most likely I will get the Panasonic lenses. Until then I am really enjoying my 1.8 or faster prime lenses.

Tele zoom:

Same story here. If the new tele would be as sharp as the Pana35-100, I would opt for the extra reach of the rumored Oly lens. Currently I have the 75-300II which is sharp from120-220mm but so sloooow ...

Standard zoom:

I am quite happy with my Pana12-35, the Oly 12-40 would not make me jump. Still hoping for 12-50 or 12-60/2.8-4, but being realistic a 40-200 makes the 12-60 nearly impossible to happen ...

Anyhow, I have the following primes 12/2.0, 17/1.8, 25/1.4, 45/1.8, 60/2.8 and 75/1.8. I love them all. For zooms I have the 9-18, 12-50 and the 75-300. They are good enough but all of them are too slow.
