I have been shooting with my NEX-7 for a long time now and when I got it I installed the eye cup and never tgought about it much again. Well today I tried it without the eye cup and I think I actually like it better, it seems more comfortable to my eye, works just as well in bright light and makes the camera less bulky

so I would like to conduct a little survey to see how many people here use the eye cup on their 6/7 and how many have ditched the eye cup

if it is easier for you you can just post yes or no in the subject line to indicate if you use the eye cup or not

thanks

Well I lost my eye cup. Seem to be doing quite alright without it. It costs about $26 to get an original eye cup replacement from Sony. Goodness.

Heh. Thanks for that link.

I went to my local Sony service centre outside of the US to enquire and was scared off by the price. Horrible! Good thing I still love how pictures turn out on my SEL24F18Z and Nex 6...

Thanks for the light bulb moment, just reading the title. Hanging my Nex 6 on a sling is bound to rub that thing off, even though it feels very securely attached.

I second the part on it feeling very securely attached. I was walking around in the Venetian in Macau and before I knew it, I had no eye cup left. The only explanation I could give myself was that it accidentally brushed my camera+eye cup against my clothes a bit harder than usual.

Good thing I can prob get it from $10 from the online Sony store. Looking around to see if there are any accessories I can get at the same time.

Shooting naked without eye cup, will your eye get scratched or poked?

Or if eyeglass wearer, will shooting with out eye cup cause possible eyeglass scratching?
I wear glasses so I don't use the eye-cup. I tried but it just doesn't work, not in my case.

If I wasn't wearing glasses I would use it as I tried it (with adjusting the diopter) and it felt really good. It's just that taking off my glasses every time I want to take a shot is simply not a funny game.

Yes my glasses were scratched pretty badly and quickly.

I now have glued a felt with rubber glue backing around the 'naked' viewfinder and that works wonders: lets me see the whole frame with my glasses on AND does not scratch them.

I wish someone would make such a felt pad window surround pattern to replace mine when the glue comes off every 3-4 months ..

Hint, HINT, dear China !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If juggling prescription glasses to shoot is an issue for you, you might find these interesting:

They're also at Amazon, Adorama & directly from Hoodman. They're pricey and not what I picture when I think 'rugged'. But I have a year with them now and can say they genuinely work: catch the lens edge with the eye cup and flip the lens up, then focus. After the first hour I stopped thinking about them- the motion is automatic. I bought prescription sunglass lenses, but they should work equally well with clear prescription lenses.
