As someone who owns and uses some of the finest DSLR cameras ever made on a daily basis I want something very different from my compact ‘walkabout’ camera. I make the vast majority of my income from taking pictures and I make the rest from teaching, writing and consulting about photography. For me to want to go out and just take pictures for the joy of it, the camera has to be fun to use. And it is on that simple point that Fujifilm are getting it so completely right with their x-series range. The X100 was a great start and the X10 was a brilliant companion. Since then we’ve had the X Pro1, the XE1, X100s and this X20 to enjoy. The single factor that unites all of these cameras is the pleasure you can take from using them when you spend so much time using other (better?) cameras.

That brings me to the next point. There’s no way that I’d use the X20 instead of a Canon EOS5D MkII or MkIII for a normal assignment but on my own time, taking pictures for pleasure and for the family the Fujifilm X20 is wonderful. It will be beaten at some point and it remains true that it isn’t the best compact in terms of image quality, speed, flexibility or any of a dozen other quantifiable factors. I propose to introduce a new scale based on the likelihood that you’ll actually bother to take the camera out and use it willingly and with a smile on your face. On that measure, and that measure alone, the Fujifilm gets a perfect ten. Right now, I’m off to the shops to get my morning paper; on foot and with my X20 over my shoulder…

Lets just say that one ring is dedicated to focus. The other ring could be dedicated to zoom perhaps and with a press of a modifier, can be used to control A. A dedicated aperture ring takes some space like what the LX-7 has now.

We are talking two different languages.. :-D You are talking about how you would like a new camera to be. My question instead is specific to a model that already exists...

I'd be interested in learning how you know whether or not a person has just one camera and, therefore, to treat their opinions as pointless. Perhaps you could elaborate on this?
That came out wrong I suppose, I mean people like Joms, when he had his HS30 he would claim it's the best bridge camera in the world and now he has the HS50 that's the best in the world.

Some people just like to stick up for their purchase, there's not many Fuji cameras I've not owned in the last 5 years, if it's a dog I say so and sell it, some people that own the model I'm calling a dog get very defensive about it because they have one.

I doubt there is anyone interested in photography and only owns one camera. ;P

Not uncommon for Fuji cameras since 2011. I am 3 of 3 for failed Fuji cameras bought after 3/2011, and 12 of 12 for no failures before that, bought new or used.
Fuji as a company is not alone in this regard in 2 respects:
  1. Poor quality control
  2. They have users who overlook any flaw

I think you and I operate at differing levels of "dogness". And you are completely entitled to that.

I had an HS30EXR - and goodness did that produce some weird artefacts. It had zoom range, but it was too damn difficult getting anything usable out of it. At best it looked like I'd taken it through the privacy glass of the bathroom window and at worst it was taking detail and throwing it away. That was a dog through and through.

The X20 though is a massive step up. It is still hammered into the ground - for image quality - by my 5Dii and my GH2 and GX1 are more versatile by a country mile, but there is something that calls to me with this X20 - it's intangible and it is like some distilled essence of what a camera should be like.

It does have 1 massive advantage for me over the GX1/GH2 (and 5Dii) - the leaf shutter - the silent shot. I do a lot of small theatre shots while sat by the performers and this is brilliant. If I could afford it, I'd have a Leica, but I can't (well, I can, but I can't afford a Leica and a divorce) and this does the job.

It sounds like he's not a man afraid of giving strong opinions..surprising then that hes stuck with the same camera model 4 times before he abandoned it
It was the same with the F550EXR, I had four of them too, when you're waiting for a replacement and the replacements arrive faulty you have no alternative but to send it back and wait for another. Eventually though you give up.

I wanted to get some use from them so I could give a valid opinion in places like this, we're all entitled to a view and just because mine is different to yours it doesn't make it wrong.

Personally I find opinions from people that have just the one camera pointless, they for some strange reason like to stick up for it, trying to justify their purchase I guess.

Sounds like we have the same level of "dogness" the HS30 certainly was and still is a dog. I don't recall ever calling the X20 a dog though, it's far from perfect and if anything like the X10 about as reliable as British Rail.

From that list of cameras you sound more like a guy into video, I've never liked Panasonic or Canon for still images. The Canons must have something going for them as a lot of Pro's use them but then most of the images are B&W, tiny and in newspapers. I guess they like the FPS. :P

LOL! I see. And that was my point for starters... Additional features for the "LX9"!

Hiya. Sorry about the missed context... went too deep that the question was masked. I don't own an LF-1 but it seems to me that since the singular control ring is supposed to control all, then like a DSLR's thumb dial the aperture is controlled from there as well.

Ok, thanks, then, unless there is a handy button to switch Control Ring from zoom to aperture, not very usable

The trouble is you can get far better images with a camera that will fit in your pocket.
