I have had great time and nice shots from Nex F3 with 18-55 mm.

and know I may need a sel35f1.8 for low light shots, but this image shot at lake, there was a lot of light and sunny but image didnt come clear.

is it due to hands shake if there was any?

or any way to improve sharpness/IQ?

Oloneo HDR added some but didnt improve much

of course, sunset one is clear one

I was talking about the one with Boats that isn't clear enough

The image is not OOF but the corners are a bit soft and overall it is not razor sharp. Where did you focus? Increasing the shutter speed may help. The best way to isolate issues and determine what works is to try multiple approaches to see if things change and how. I used to keep a log back in the day. Now everything is easy to review but you still need to change things up to see what is working.

Also DPReview is a poor platform for judging critical issues. I assume you are viewing this on a large and ideally a color corrected monitor.

Also what is the subject? You may want to define the subject rather than just shooting randomly. I am hard pressed to find a clear subject in this shot. Regardless shoot more and try different approaches.

In photo class we had to come up with a minimum of six different ways to shoot one subject. So the subject is a car, shoot from above, from ground level, using shallow DOF, a grill shot etc That type of exercise is valuable and I would also suggest shooting with various apertures/ISO/shutter combinations. The camera may have a bracketing mode which makes things easy. You can also change just one variable between shots like aperture to determine how that impacts things. If you change everything it is harder to judge which variable created a change.

Have fun!

Firstly thks for well detailed answer and offering em diff options to review

the subject I was trying to focus are those 2 fast moving Boats (2 Boats moving fast in the water, in the back and not the ones in the front)

But max zoom I had was only 55 mm, so couldn't get close to those 2 Boats as you can see. I had default 18-55 mm lens

but over all, image wasnt clear though iit was enough light and sunny. not low light.

yes i will try diff exposure, and also bracketing

I have had avg images in Low light, but great images in good light so far with Nex, so this image surprised me. I have a major vacation coming w/ Family and want to do better, so anybody's help is greatly appreciated :)

can this due to turbulence or haze in the Lake ?

The image isn't too bad but you used F13 & anything over F11 allows some diffraction to creep in which adds slight blur to the picture.

Edit - PS when I replied to this post there were no replies !! DPR strikes again .....

I think your aperture is too small. I seldom use aperture above f11.
I use and enjoy manual mode a lot, but most of vacation pics taken by my family members who dont want anything more than Super auto or max program mode, which chooses mostly F9 to f13 for Landscape,

I can try F6 and f9 when I go to diff Lake here, sometime

but i thought higher f# gives high DOF, fpr Landscape to give a sharp. isn't that true

This is what you get with 55mm f/13. Nothing wrong with that. A print on A3 will be sharp. When you want a perfect sharp image at pixel level view, buy a good MF 50mm and do not stop it down above f/8.

Have fun with the F3. Your sunset picture is very nice.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the sharpness or detail in that shot. It's avg, likely a bit soft due to diffraction, but by no means "soft".

Constant quarrelling, the childish fits,
And our clothes in a pile on the ottoman;
All the slander and doublespeak
Were only foolish attempts to show you did not mean
Anything but the blatant proof
Was your lips touching mine in a photobooth.'

Yes, I mean manual focus standard lenses. Most of them are very good and they are cheap. One of the best is the Olympus OM 50/1.8. I bought one with a body for € 20 on a dutch advertising website. I also had Canon FD lenses (50/1.8 and 50/1.4), but the Oly Zuiko is so small and light on the NEX, it is more fun to use and it is as sharp as the FD 50/1.4. MF lenses can also change the way, you take pictures. You have to think more about the things you do and the steps you are taking before releasing the shutter. You chose the aperture, the focus point, etc.

thks zink. yes few said Oly 50mm MG is a god one, but for now I am leaning towards ordering Pentax 50mm as my 2nd camera is Pentax K30 :) so i can use in both

appreciate your time and enjoy weekend
