Hi,

I'm a beginner and looking into buying a faster lens to shoot at night. I have a D5100.

So what I want to know really is what features makes the Nikon 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2 cost more, $949.95. Nikon 50mm f/1.2 Lens AIS, $649.95.

The 32 mm f1.2 won't work with your camera as its only for the Nikon 1.

Try the 35mm f1.8G. It's awesome.

Your body is excellent with high ISO: the 35mm 1.8 would be excellent for night shooting. And, as mentioned already, it is excellent glass and AF. You do not need the extra stop of low light performance of the AIS 50mm 1.2 to shoot @ night. However, given you are shooting Dx, the extra stop would help you if you wanted more shallow DOF. But, as mentioned above, MF on the 5100 would alomst be a crap shoot, unless you want to modify the focus screen to a split prism or something.

So, short answer--buy the inexpensive and excellent 35mm 1.8 and have a ball!! Best

None of them will work with your camera. One won't even mount it, the other won't meter nor focus.

Don't buy the hype for fast lenses just for the sake of it, remain on safe ground and go for a 35 f/1.8 or 50 f/1.8 depending on what you shoot and you won't pay much for them. D5100 as other cameras has several limitations with old lenses as AI and AI-S are. It's much more suited to work with the new ones. If you want to try manual focusing with proper exposure, you might go for a Voigtlaender or Zeiss lens, but they will be accordingly expensive and you may understand you made a big mistake too late.

Would the 50mm f/1.2 Lens AIS be better than the f1.8? Since it's faster, how much difference would it make?
I will defer to owners of the 50mm f/1.2 to comment on its quality, but are you aware that AI-S lenses are manual focus? This will give you considerable problems with a D5100. Also, that lens will not meter on your camera.

Since th OP is a beginner, one of the 1.8g primes (with autofocus and metering on his camera) will be a much better choice.

yup, I would say no on the 1.2 AIS.

Either the 50 AFS 1.8 or 1.4 will make you very happy

I think I'll get the 50 AFS 1.4, but its twice the price of the 1.8. Is it worth it?

2/3 of a stop, objectively speaking it is "worth it" If the price difference isn't too significant it's worth it.

I own the 50mm f1.2 ais and it was very difficult to master. It took me years before I began to feel very comfortable shooting with it. I developed my own techniques for shooting manual only and through that I manage great results from this lens.

I second the 35mm f1.8, it's a great lens for DX camera bodies. Light and versatile and also very inexpensive.
