Defective Nikon d7000? Autofocus not working?

So I finally took the plunge and purchased my first dslr, a Nikon d7000. Took me months of research and saving and my camera finally arrived 6 days ago. However yesterday out of the blue the AutoFocus just stopped working! I've only used the camera for 4 days! Needless to say that I'm very disappointed.

The camera settings had not changed from when I used it the night before...when it was working perfectly. Then when I picked it up the next day the Autofocus would not focus and would not even snap a shot. It can snap a shot now and then if you wait a long time but that doesn't really matter since the pic ends up all blur anyway because the camera refuses to focus.

I've tried removing and replacing the lens, checking sd card, checking the autofocus buttons on both the camera and lens, checking to make sure the focus is not locked anywhere...still the camera will not autofocus. I switched to manual focus and the camera works fine in manual. It's just the autofocus that will not work.

I'm using a kit lens that came with the camera - 18-105mm VR lens. Any other suggestions on what may be wrong with the camera? Is there something I'm missing?

Now I wonder if it would be better to either send it to Nikon for repair or if perhaps I should just return the camera. I'm worried that after only 4 days and it already needs repair, how will the camera hold up after repair? Has anyone else had issues with the Nikon d7000 and autofocus issues or camera breaking after such a short time? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!

I wonder if perhaps I should have just purchased the Canon EOS 60D instead.

You didn't by any chance change the button setting (f5) AE-L/AF-L to AF-ON?

In that case, you can only auto-focus by using the AE-L/AF-L button.

Try to use "Reset user settings".

Do a green button reset (hold the two buttons with a green dot down next to them simultaneously for two seconds) using the exposure compensation button and the Quality (magnifying glass button). If that doesn't work check that both switches on the camera and lens are set to AF (the camera one is located below the lens release button). Finally if that doesn't work give the contacts on both the camera and lens a clean.

I'd check to be sure your battery is charged before I did anything else.

Be forewarned, most (not all) Auto Focus issues are user misunderstanding and confusion over how the camera works. The D7K AF is a very sophisticated and complex system, with a myriad of alternative settings. You will need to become good friends with the manual and a good guide to the D7K before you master it. But it is an excellent camera which will reward you for the effort. Please be sure to tell us how you are doing, and keep asking for help - there are many very knowledgeable and helpful people here. And we all started where you are! Good luck, and best wishes in your new adventure.

If the previous suggestions don't work, have you tried a different lens.

The problem is just as likely being caused by the lens rather than the camera!

Mine has done that on occasions too

With the kit lens taking it of and replacing it did the job.

On the weekend It did it with my Brand new (2ndhand) 17-55mm and nothing worked taking off, cleaning contacts, resetting settings etc.

Finaly using the live view seemed to "knockit "into action.

Try that

But it shouldn't act that way. If it does, it's an issue and should be repaired under warranty.

One shouldn't "live" with that.

BirgerH,

Thank you! Found this thread through Google. I was thinking I needed to send my D7000 for service because it wouldn't AF at all. I tried the green dot reset to no avail.

Your post made me recall that I had been playing with AF settings and moved it to the back button! Doh!!! Interesting that doesn't get reset by the green dot, and there's no indication unless you hunt down that exact menu setting.

Looking from the front of the camera body there is a small butter bottom right of the bayonet mount. Is the camera set to AF or M?

Hi.

Green dot resets the settings shown at page 151 in the user manual to defaults.

To reset User Menu settings, use the "Reset usersettings" menu in User Settings menu. So it is with the Record menu settings and with the U1 and U2 settings (in the Setup menu)

But glad to be at any help :-)

As it happened shortly after the lens stopped auto focusing completly

So I sent it back to the shop and they tested the lens on a couple of cameras ...no problems,,mmmm

After another ph conversation they tested it on 10 different camers from new straight out of box and a variety of second hand ones... it only worked on half of them!!!!!

Anyway in the end Nikon reset/reinstalled firmware into the lens

It's been perfect ever since

Hi!
I bought this D7000 stuff yesterday only...
And when I was going through the camera..
I experimented with almost everything...
And the day after yesterday what I get to see is, it has stopped focussing when I zoom it to the full(with 18-105mm Vr lens) and the picture is whole blur...
Also that at night I bought it I also experienced that it was going through back focussing... Pls help with it??
