Frances, good luck with your purchase. Beach Camera has a deservedly checkered reputation, their oral promises not being worth the paper they're written on (as Sam Goldwyn used to say). They are adept at all those NY "specialties", bait & switch, accessories, grey market... Be sure to keep an eye on your credit card account and make sure they don't charge your card before they actually ship the camera. And be sure to check that it's a Nikon USA warranty if that's what you paid for.

Good luck Frances,

I've just been through the wringer with ordering a 990 from the internet. The net shopping guides do list the prices of equipment on the internet but doesn't say if the vendors are worth a crap or not.

(1) First, I ordered from CompDirect but after the usual "order upgrade" questions, they said it would be backordered and take 2 - 3 weeks so I said forget it.

(2) Then, I saw another "deal" at Nationwide Computers and right before I clicked the final CONFIRM ORDER button, I saw their UPS shipping charges of $79 ground and $133 next day delivery and stopped in time.

(3) Next, a trip to Digital Etailer who had the 990 for $820 + $19 shipping and ordered it on-line with their Stock Status saying YES. The next day, a salesman called trying the "order upgrade" routine and I declined so they said it would ship. A week later, I called them about the status and was told it was on back order because all they had in stock was the "990 kits" and I only wanted the camera. The order was cancelled then.

So, I think I'll wait until this weekend and order it from someone like B&H Photo or State Street Direct for a little more money but with a lot more peace of mind. I know they will be there after the sale too in case it needs to be returned for any of the many problems people have described here.

I hope Beach Camera comes through for you and that no one else will have to go through a slmiliar screwed up mess. It really takes the fun out of internet shopping.

I just received my 990 from Beach Camera via FedEx 2nd day. Everything
seems OK. A LOT more camera than my 800. Pretty complicated, but I'm
sure I'll figure it out sooner or later.I paid $819 also, but shipping was a
little steep ($34). Still a pretty good deal.

Mike

I went thru simillar situations with fairly reputable companies(outpost.com,egghead.com and one other whom I forget at the moment).I did some research in the forums before I placed orders and I'm glad I did, they kept me away from the really disreputable places like beststop.I did hear about the company I finally placed my order (and got the camera)with in this forum.I was surprised that such a small outfit ,one that I never heard of as well as one that isn't listed with places like cnet, did such a good job and had so many high opinions with people in here.I orderd the cp990 and had it the next day at a good price, and this was not too long after they came out when nobody seemed to have them.
http://www.365usa.com is the place I got it from.

Mike:

You might try Mercata if you're in the market for a 990 (search for Mercata on this forum and you'll see people have had good luck with their service & everything else - but the main thing is you know you're getting the U.S. warranty. I don't think any of the NY shops have it even though they say they do - I got screwed once on a video camera that way.

The 990 is currently $809 AFTER you include the $100 new customer discount. The $100 offer expires today ($100 can be spent until 10/30) but the current camera powerbuy ends at 10pm tonight (PST?).

Just for your FYI the cp990 is out there in both european and USA version. the european made has red inserts in the grip while the USA's are purple. The camera is the same, the european has more software. The only problem with the european is that Nikon USA will not honor the warrenty so warrenty work will have to go through the seller. You can get a better price on the european models which is why you see them so cheap on the net. I bought mine from Focus camera in NY by mail order, they are also on the net .I had to pay an extra $40 for a USA camera $850 when i ordered it . It came in two days and has been great. Good Luck
