Hi all,

I am really torn between purchasing one of these models. I've read reviews over and over again. Thus I am fully aware of all of the features of these cameras. However, I would like to know if anyone has first hand experience with the picture quality of these cameras, ex. Sharpness, Color, and the very important Lens Distortion. I know they both must be great overall cameras, but my top priority is the image quality. I am a DSLR owner, but I want something a little lighter/smaller when I travel.

Thanks!

I do not have experience with either camera, but looking at the review photo samples for the G15/P7700 on DPR, it looks like a toss up between them, primarily looking at RAW images. You did not indicate which DSLR system you have. If you have a Nikon, then perhaps sticking with the same brand will make using the P7700 an easier transition? If Canon, same idea for the G15. Do you need the longer reach of the P7700 and the swivel LCD? How about the optical tunnel viewfinder and smaller size of the G15?

Another option you didn't list is the Canon G1X. It will give you near DSLR image quality, and about the same speed/performance as the other two you list. The price will be higher, but so will the results, especially at higher ISOs. Size is not much larger than the P7700.

Mike...if only we lived closer....I have a G15 that's not needed any longer. Oh well. That's life. (my RX100 is usually w me.)

Thanks for the information Dennis. The DSLR that I own is the Canon T2i. I actually like the articulating screen on the P7700, but for a strange reason: I like that the LCD screen is protected from scratches when not in use. I also like the fact that you can put an everyday protective filter on the P7700. With the P7700 and GX15, I am mainly concerned about image quality in Jpeg mode. Thanks again for your thoughts.

I wrestled with the same decision three months ago - and went with the Nikon P7700. Articulating superior image screen, and excellent IQ were the determining factors.

Same situation and I chose the G15 a few months ago.

But you know what? Both have excellent and probably equal IQ. So choose based on the features and characteristics!

(I went primarily for size, build, and the little bit smaller aperture for better low-light)

You mean wider aperture, right? Not smaller for better low light!

Thanks all for you comments. I read a comparison of the two cameras on Digital Camera Info.com They are saying that the Canon is the better choice if you do a lot jpeg shooting, due to the in-camera processing. They say, at times, the Nikon images look a little flat. Since I do a lot of jpeg shooting, maybe the Canon is the way to go for me. However, if I want the jpeg mode to be a little more sharper and have more color punch, doesn't the Nikon allow you to increase these settings? I suppose they might just be talking about the default settings of the two cameras. Does anyone shoot jpeg with the P7700? How are the results? Overall, the review/comparison gives a slight edge to Nikon. I KNEW this was going to happen: Analysis Paralysis!!!

Thanks.

You can easily punch up the P7700 to equivalent jpeg saturation, sharpness, contrast in the Picture Control menu. There are quite a few punched up P7700 images in my gallery here, if you're interested. Here are a few smaller samples:

If you have not done so already, head down to your local camera store and spend some time handling both. It's one thing to read the specs, it's another thing entirely when they are in your hand, where they will spend a lot of time. All other things being equal, pick the one that you feel most comfortable with.
