Thanks to all who steered me in the direction of this lens. It's a blast to use - great for portraits, and superb for macro. I picked it up on Sat and had some fun over the weekend.

Those colors are fantastic! Did you do any post-processing? Very nice captures.

Oh... the 100 2.8 Macro is calling my name!

Any chance of downloading a RAW image shot with that lens???

Very, very nice. I'm curious, how much "set-up" was needed to get this shot? Did you relocate the flower to get the nice dark background? Did you use a spray bottle for the drops? Or was this just a perect little glimpse of nature? I assume you used tripod. At what aperature?

Thanks for sharing,

Adam

All,

Glad you liked the pics. The poppies were across the street at my neighbor's house. No tripod or other setup used - just handheld bending over in the flower garden. The droplets were real - the sprinklers had just gone off. I used the Expodisc to set WB (if you don't have one, get one!) and the settings were 1/350 sec, f/4.5 (#2 was f/5.6), ISO 100, center-weighted average. No post processsing other than some Lab Color USM and resizing. I couldn't believe it - I did Auto Contrast and the picture didn't change at all! When I shoot my 28-135 the contrast is usually way off. I can't wait to shoot some more.

I can't wait to get mine. With all of this month's photography expenditures I'll have to wait till next month. Oh, the agony!

Derek Hill..Did you use a flash or ambient? Hand held or tripod? I'm impressed.

Looks nice, but what is it?

I don't think Canon makes a 100/2.8, only a 100/2.0.

BEAUTIFUL pics, BTW! I will definitely be getting this lens (but not yet).

Just natural sunlight. WB was set using the Expodisc.

No, the 100mm 2.0 is a different, non-macro lens. I am using the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro USM. It works great as a portrait lens, too. The bokeh is wonderful and the lens is very sharp and contrasty (is contrasty a word? ;-)

Perry,

The Expodisc is a calibrated plastic disc that allows exactly 18% of the available light through to the lens, giving you a perfect grey exposure. You hold it in front of your lens, shoot a frame in AWB, then select the Expodisc image for CWB. I've used grey cards in the past and the Expodisc blows them away. Do a search on the forum for more info, or go to http://www.expodisc.com/
They cost around $65 for the 72mm, but are worth every penny.

i have this lens myself, proud owner for about a week now - somewhere along the road (before i bought it) i read a post about using an off-camera shoe cord with a 550ex or 420ex Canon flash and a Sto-fen Omnibounce for lighting...

so i tried it, it works great for me - i typically hand-hold the flash and have the camera either mounted on a tripod or even handhold it all when i'm brave and haven't had too much coffee...

perhaps not as "cutting edge" as one of the $400-$550 macro flash units, but it seems to work nicely for me....
