I am considering purchasing used D3. Where do you go looking for such gear and what to look for, other than shutter actuations?

Known sources, no particular order:
I am sure there a lot more places to go check, any more suggestions?

how bout your local friendly brick and mortar store?

Cincinnati, Ohio isn't that big of a market that I will find that type of thing here:(

I bought mine off eBay. Had one bad experience which eBay corredted and of course the good experience getting the D3 I have now.

I for one am a fan of eBay and PayPal.

Cameta Camera and B & H may have something used. Most likely B & H will have it (at least at some point).

I found one with low mileage on E-Bay about 6 months ago.... Good luck

Adorama is also another source.

You should consider a privste sale. The Fred Miranda buy/sell forum is very good. That is where I posted my Nikon D3 when I decided to sell it.

I have bought a ton of lenses and cameras on eBay with no difficulty. A degree of care is required but overall it is a good source. Also no camera store markup. I have also purchased used from Roberts and KEH.

I have noted craigslist seems to generate a number of bad stories.

Cameta camera. They provide shutter actuations.

Located in amityville,NY.

I bought a D4 with 1 shutter actuation. A refurb at over $1000 less than a new camera.

Great guys, great deal. They had aD3X with 128 actuations.

Good luck.

I use KEH from time to time but living in the same state I am required to pay sales tax when if I buy out of state do not. I think that is a little unfair for KEH as it makes a big difference on high end purchases.

But they are very reputable. Sometimes a little over priced but they have it all and stand behind it.

my only other issue has been their use of Fed Ex which sux around these parts. It takes three days to get a package 60 miles.

What's unfair is that you are not paying the Consumer Use Tax in Georgia, which most states (to my knowledge) require consumers to pay on out-of-state purchases. So, there actually is no disadvantage to purchasing from in-state if you are following the law.

Individuals:
Georgia Consumer’s Use Tax Return may be used by individuals to report their consumer’s use tax liability. Individuals should remit consumer’s use tax on the total amount paid for the items purchased including any amount paid for shipping and handling charges, warranties, labor charges, and other taxable services.
Example: An individual purchases a coat from a mail order catalog company and is not charged Georgia sales tax. Consumer’s use tax is due since Georgia sales tax was not paid.

... on a complete internet stranger? Is there a state other than, say, Montana that isn't riddled with inefficiencies and wasteful spending? Really? This is a photography forum. There shouldn't be any religious or political discussions here. Certainly we should never sit in a lofty place and pronounce the next man as a tax cheat.

But aside from all of that, the D3s is my dream light writing machine. I wish I could justify looking around for a good used one.

Best regards to all,

Tony

Tony, Please go back and re-read what trundracamper wrote, at no time did he say anything about cosmonaut being a tax cheat. The way I read tundracamper's reply, it looks to me like tundracamper simply figured that cosmonaut was not informed on the law, so tundracamper did a very kind thing and directed cosmonaut to a location where cosmonaut could learn more about the law, if so desired.

My gut feeling tells me that if cosmonaut had simple not bothered to voice an opinion on the tax laws, trundracamper would not felt the need to enlighten cosmonaut to the laws of his state. I know if I had been ignorant of the laws of my state and a fellow citizen felt light enlightening me, I would be appreciate of that. This is NOT to say I would follow the law, just that I would appreciate the fact that someone cared enough about me to want to help open my eyes to a truth.

In Peace, my friend!
