Buying the NEX-5R but deciding on a lens... want a portable GOOD camera

One thing you're going to find with the 5R is that you only have the back screen to view your pictures. I'm waiting for the EVF kit (just under $300) because in brighter light the screen becomes totally useless. It's frustrating to want a shot and not be able to see anything. The EVF is one advantage the more expensive Nex's have.
I find the screen is perfectly visible when set to "Sunny Weather" brightness. This does drain the battery faster, however.
I've had it on maximum brightness and couldn't see a thing, regardless of which way I tried to shoot. Snow and a bright day may be something you never get where you live. Battery life isn't a concern since I have 3 batteries.

Grant.
I live in the desert where sun is a near-constant. Snow, not so much, so maybe that is an issue. "Sunny Weather" mode works great for me; I rarely feel the need to use the EVF. I think Sunny Weather mode changes some other settings besides just brightness, it apparently does something with the color and contrast of the screen as well.

I'm very surprised that you can't see "a thing" if you are using the Sunny Weather setting.

NEX-5R/L? NEX-5R kit with the 16-50mm pancake zoom? A lot more compact than the 18-55

Personally I think the 16mm prime pancake is too wide for everyday use, but it does make the camera very compact

Also, there is a small flash that comes with the NEX-5R. When I was ordering mine I didn't think it came with a flash and was trying to figure out how to juryrig my F56AM, but it does come with a small flash that works pretty well given it's size.
The 16-50mm zoom sounded like a perfect range, but I thought the reviews on that were pretty bad. Do you have it? How do you like it? If it's a good lens, it really would be perfect for me!I thought that was the perfect solution until I started reading about it. I'd love to hear from someone that has it.

I didn't realize that about the flash... is it just a pop-up (forward facing) flash, or can it rotate? I always bounce my flash up/back, so I think I'd still need an add-on flash.

Thank you!!
The 5R has a very good removable flash which is more powerful than the one on the NEX-6. Rating 10 vs. 7.

Sure, get the 16-50 kit by all means, it's cheap. But keep in mind there have been serious quality disparities, it seems, with all of the NEX lenses. So for more lenses, I suggest the twin Sigma f2.8 lenses; the 19 and the 30mm. Very affordable and outstanding reliable performance.

Anybody knows how the RX100 image quality compares to a NEX-5R with the 20mm f2.8? I can imagine the NEX is a better camera but maybe the RX100 Zeiss lens outperforms the Sony lens. I am still debating what would be the better option from a image quality standpoint.

You can open different topic for that, but in sum I can assume that RX100 lens will outperform sel20f28. Even cheap Sigma 19mm outperforms it in terms of sharpness. However, with RX100 you will be stuck with only one lens.

The sigma 30 is probably sharper than the CZ 24. That doesn't mean that the CZ 24 is junk or that the RX100 will outperform the CZ 24.
However, with RX100 you will be stuck with only one lens.
The problem with the Nex and 20mm is that you're fixed at 20mm. Aside from that, there are a lot of advantages to the Nex. If you must have a very compact camera with a zoom lens, then I'd get the RX100, but I'd put"lens quality" aside and buy based on how it is to be used.

Thanks for your response. I understand the limitations of one lens. I already own a NEX with multiple lenses but am torn between the sel20f28 or RX100 for travelling light. NEX with 20mm is compact enough for me and I like 20 mm, but I want the best possible image quality and was wondering if the RX100 is better than the nex in direct comparison from a pure image quality standpoint.
