Good afternoon,

Recently bought a refurbished Canon 7d. Noticed that when I press the shutter, it makes a loud clunky mechanical sound! is that normal?. I appreciate any help with this, thank you

If it sounds like this you've got nothing to worry about.

Is this your first SLR (Digital or Film)? If you are used to shooting with a P&S then the shutter sound of a SLR is quite different. It is a mechanical function instead of an electrical function. The mirror has to move out of the way (just like in the video posted above) and then the shutter moves across the sensor for the exposure. All of this creates some noise.

Had to smile when I read that. Is this your first DSLR? If this isn't your first DSLR, then you'd be posting if it DIDN'T make a loud clunky mechanical sound!

Did you check to see if it was taking pictures? If so, then all is probably good.

There have been four responses in less than an hour including a sneer/sarcastic one. Do not they say the world is made of different kind of people !!!!!!!!

The best is the one with a link to the video. Very reassuring to the OP and to other members on the forum.

People like Mike make all the difference. May their breed grow. :-)

I think it is normal. Based on my experience with 1000D and 5DMKII the 7D shutter sound feels more clunky or a big object moving around than the others. I think 5DKMII is sweeter sound. I know it is hard to describe sound in writing.

Took the camera to work and had three pro photographers look at it and they all said it was normal. You have a great camera, enjoy and have fun. That answers it.
