Is it just me or is the d800 shutter quieter/smoother after the FW update?

Dont you think Nikon would have boasted about such a change? Why would they keep it a secret?

To keep the change list small and simple. Marketing doesn't want a seven page white paper with the gory details of everything that changed. They just want a few sentences that go over the major items.

but it seems like something is different with the shutter action/feel/sound since the FW update. If anything, I like it and certainly enjoying the more accurate focus. Don't even know if it's possible that firmware can affect the shutter...
I ran the shutter sound through a sound analyzer before and after the firmware update. No difference. You are experiencing the phenomena of power of suggestion and wishful thinking.

It's a joke son. Laugh.

Or not, but don't get your panties in a twist.

Do you test that on a tripod or just let the camera scoot along the floor?

Perhaps for some of the presumptive changes (the better 0-60 acceleration, for example), but since shutter noise / sound seems to be an issue among some folks (crops up on a regular basis on the forum at least) I'd think Nikon would mention it.

After all, they did boast about the improved "3D" nature of the images on a D4 (although, in true Nikon fashion, they fail to actually make it clear what they're talking about leaving us to spend hours guessing).

Nikon certainly would do us a favor if they were a bit more verbose when it came to technical details. It can't be all that hard to get one of the engineers to write up a basic list and then have marketing mess it up.

Did you do that? Really? If so, I won't bother to mess with it tomorrow. If work was slow, I was going to record the shutter sound, re load the version 1.01 software and re record and run it through an analyzer program.

If you post the visualizations, that might convince some diehards that it's the power of suggestion.

As I've mentioned before, Nikon has a potential gold mine here. I'll be we start seeing Firmware updates with Chrome / Firefox-like numbering*. By the end of the year the D800 and D4 at least should have functioning antigravity (great for those heavy telephotos). We won't even want the D400.

* Both Chrome and Firefox web browsers have decided to try to impress everyone by claiming every little update / bug fix deserves a new version number. So we get 'new' software every week. I think Chrome is at version 22 right now. Not only does it go to 11 ....

I've noticed that too!

Susan.

I used the camera again today and I believe you are right. The shutter mechanism does seem slightly quieter and smoother. This is a good thing. So far there seems to be some nice surprises in that firmware package. Some unexpected improvements.

Greg.

How come a firmware update may affect mechanics? What are you guys smoking? :) Want some!

Just to play devil's advocate here.

I suspect it's placebo, however if not; could it be that Nikon's intention was to reduce mirror slap and what people are hearing is this lesser impact. As such haven't listed this for want of not losing face by admitting it was a problem?

No offense to anyone here, but I honestly cannot tell whether this entire thread is serious or intended as a joke.

Also, it would be an implicit admission that the original shutter was too loud. And marketing people do not want to admit to any shortcomings.

After FW update: On a breezy day while trying to do close-ups of a group of crocus in my backyard, my neighbor was taking photos of her 9 month old son with a cell phone. Taking a break from the flowers, I tried my D800 + 60mm macro lens, no flash - each exposure the the shutter noise startled the little guy, causing him to jump and/or blink... Not as scary as the Easter Bunny at the mall, he eventually got used to it.

Ok, here we go. Isn’t someone going to suggest that the new shutter sound is a defect? Perhaps the left sensor fix is connected somehow? You know with all the talk about curves and angles, maybe we’re dealing with the echo effect and sound damping of materials now used to prevent dust in the upper left corner (oh, sorry, wrong camera). Anyway, don’t we need a petition or something? And where is the conspiracy theory. It’s usually out by now. Ya know, the whole sound thing really complicates things because we now have a camera that has torn us apart as a group. Perhaps we should have separate forums. Which bucket do you fit into?:

Have Left issue old sound
Have Left issue new sound
Have Left issue there’s no difference in sound
Have Left fixed old sound
Have Left fixed new sound
Have Left fixed there’s no difference in sound
Left doesn’t exist old sound
Left doesn’t exist new sound
Left doesn’t exist there’s no difference in sound
I don’t care about any of this, I’m too busy enjoying my camera
I want to wait and see what KR says- (rotflmao)
