Mark Dubovoy has a new article on Luminous Landscape and slips further into his altered reality. After a rant on how a pricey power cord can make improvements to audio that anyone can here, he launches into to how anyone can see the superiority of medium or large format even in very small crops for the web. To prove it he makes a comparison in which he is careful not to say what he is comparing. Labeling of the jpegs reveals that he has proved that a medium format image is better than the one from a camera phone! Big whoop. Are all pompous people basically silly?

I don't get your point.

He is right, there is a huge difference between those pictures. The MF one is far better even at the small display size.

The point is that using a heavily compressed iPhone image as your "target" image is hardly a reasonable comparison. I could probably take the MF image and compress it to a jpeg level of 2 and make it look even worse than the iPhone picture. That would prove nothing, just like the comparison on LL proves nothing about MF compared to an image taken with larger (but still "small") sensor and a high quality lens. Hell, not using roughly equivalent lenses invalidates the comparison, because you have no way of knowing how much of the detail loss comes from poor optics.

Only someone with an axe to grind would set up such a biased experiment, fail to disclose the salient details, and then claim it proves something. The general consensus in the LL forum seems to be the same.

Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur in out-of-focus areas of an image, or the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light. Bokeh is not the same as depth of field (DOF).

Audiophiles are retarded, news at 11... If that guy could prove power cables have an influence on sound he would now be 1 million dollar richer, see randi.org.

i think the small format image is far nicer to look at, regardless of color accuracy, white balance, or even the small areas of blown whites.

Thanks for the link.

I notice Mr. Dubovoy didn't see fit to defend his alleged deception in the forum. Rather disappointing all round.

All that's required is that he post the two images somewhere in their full, unprocessed form.

On a side note : a few second of using the LL flat view forum reminded me why I like the threaded view on DPR so much.

Could someone clue me in and tell me why do people hate Ken Rockwell and Mark Dubovoy? :-)

Probably because they are mainly interested in photography instead of gear adoration like these forums. This site seems to exist to parade new temptations in front of potential buyers, no wonder Amazon bought it.

Oh, but is Ken Rockwell really a gear addict? Wherever I click on his site, he keeps repeating that the camera doesn't matter and that almost all of what he talks about is either rented or borrowed. Either that or I got the point of those two sentences wrong.

They have taken the stance that making money in referral links and driving traffic to their site by posting outlandish things that people will repost on other forums is more important than photography. I like some of what Ken likes (haven't read the other guy), but definitely more money driven lately. Steve Huff is the same for Fuji/Leica/etc.

You misread what I said, I said that Ken is interested in photography but people at these forums aren't.

This site doesn't need to do that to survive because it taunts people with shiny new gear and that makes it sell, that is why the sellers want to own and pay for this site. Ken doesn't have that luxury.

That would be a fairly broad generalization, would it not? Are you yourself among the "people at these forums"?

I think that Ken Rockwell provoke people because he likes to write in a provocative manner. He likes to challenge established views, and does not fear apparent self-contradiction.

I havent read as much of Dubovoy, but anyone claiming things that cannot be proven scientifically for a fact ("the earth is flat", "homeopathy cures cancer", "audio amplifier power cables matter") is bound to cause some controversy.

No?

"What camera do I suggest for my friends and family when they ask? What's the best camera that can handle every kind of photo situation, but still at a reasonable price?

The Nikon D3100.

...

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links to Adorama, Amazon, eBay,B&H, Ritz, Calumet, J&R and ScanCafe when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support.
