Samsung 30mm pancake lens rattle?

Hi,

First time poster so apologies if this is something that has been asked / discussed before.

If I lightly shake my 30mm pancake lens I notice a small amount of noise / rattle from the barrel. It doesn't feel like anything is broken or bouncing about uncontrollably. The noise is fairly quiet and seems to be coming from the front where the lens slides out when focussing. In terms of functionality the lens seems fine.

I saw a review of a Minolta 30mm lens that mentioned something similar. It was considered a normal 'characteristic' for that particular lens and speculation was that the most likely reason for the rattle was down to the focus mechanism needing some looseness to achieve a quick focus speed.

My other NX lenses don't exhibit this but they appear to have a different (static) focus mechanism so the lens does not move forward / backwards to focus. I suspect it is normal for the 30mm but to help put my mind at ease I wondered if some other 30mm owners could confirm if they have noticed the same thing?

Thanks in advance!

My 30mm also has a slight rattle to it. I'd never noticed it before. When mounted on the camera it's not very noticeable. Pictures are sharp and great so I'm not too concerned about it.

I do wish Samsung used a more metal on its prime, it would give them the premium quality feel that their excellent image producing abilities deserve.
My 30mm also hase this "defect" from day 1, but is very sharp and fine, so I'd assume it's just something outside...

Thanks for putting my mind at ease guys.

Before today I'd heard the noise a couple of times when swapping lenses over but had always put it down to the front lens cap being a clip-on, so not as tight as the rear one.

The movement / noise seemed far too controlled and slight to be anything untoward (the lens almost floats in the centre of the housing so some 'travel' would seem natural I guess) so I assumed it was probably just a design/build thing. Never-the-less it's re-assuring to hear that yours do the same thing too and nothing to worry about.

Cheers again.

ps. some really nice shots of Edinburgh monkeybrain. Particularly like the one you took up Calton Hill (although they're all good).

If you want to cure yourself of worrying about lens rattles get hold of a sigma lens for m43/sony eMount and give that a shake. After you hear that any other lens will seem positively silent. Does the job though with no problems.

Thanks everyone including the OP. I found this thread by searching for this topic, which of course I was doing because I just got this lens and was concerned by the rattle. Glad to know it's fine, though I am surprised a lens design would/could include a loose part.

the 16mm and the 45mm are a step up in that regards and do have a (albeit) small metal body, so I would guess that if Samsung release an iFN version of it , they might overhaul the exterior

I had not paid attention to this "rattle" in my 30mm, until I accidentally dropped it in the kitchen last week. I was changing lenses and it slipped out of my hands. Bummer! Then I lightly shook it and heard the "rattle". I figured I had broken it, but any photos since then are fine, so I guess it's the nature of the little beast. Glad I also searched for this topic. :-)
