I just got an RX100 for an upcoming trip to Italy... leaving the Pentax DSLR system at home. After using the RX100 for a few months, I'll decide whether to keep the DSLR system or convert to a mirrorless system... likely be between the Sony NEX line and the Fugi X line.

The RX100 is fascinating Although I read a great deal about it before the purchase, I am amazed at the control it gives you. I did not realize that the Fn button is actually 7 different programmable functions. That feature along with the "drive mode", "exp comp" and "flash mode" around the control dial gives me quick access to 10 important functions!

I have fairly small hands, so the camera is not too small but slippery. I have the Richard Franiec grip coming so I expect that to help.

The next few days are going to be really fun!

Congrats on a new toy. I'm sure you will enjoy it and Italy as well!

One tip I picked up on this forum is to consider having ISO instead of flash mode on the right side of the rear control ring. I did this, as I change ISO far more often than I use flash. I moved the flash control into one of the seven Fn options. Now, the rear control ring lets me control drive mode, ISO and exposure compensation in a very natural way.

The top position controls display, and I have chosen to have just two options, full details and level. That way, I just cycle between the two, each time I press it. I'm usually in A mode, so the ring also controls aperture.

Good tip. I was actually thinking about deactivating the right "control dial" (flash) function as I keep hitting it when I start to turn the dial. I also will not be using flash often. Thanks...

Mike, welcome, as you are already learning the RX100 is an amazing little wonder. The Richard Franiec grip make a huge difference, I've found it makes one handed shooting very comfortable. Enjoy your trip, lots of terrific photo-ops in Italy.

Coincidentally, it was a recent trip to Italy when I first took just my RX100, leaving my NEX-7 at home. Here's some of the pics I took:

Great photos from Italy. Thanks for the link. I would love to see those sites but we will only be in Rome, Venice, Florence and Lake Garda. I'll toss a coin in the Trevi fountain to be sure of a return trip!

FWIW, I kept my flash on the control dial. I don't use it that much, but because it has a nice "fill flash" feature I left it as is so I will remember. I was going to make it one of my Function, but thought that if I needed a fill-flash real quick it's available. Plus I won't forget where the Flash feature is. That's me :-)

There is a lot the camera can do and how you want to customize it to work best for you. I'm still learning about it.

Good luck on your trip. I know that you will enjoy the RX100.

A few tips.

I use mine in manual mode for 99% of the time, with auto focus on. However, I programmed the centre button on the control wheel to be toggle manual/auto focus. Its great when I want to fine tune focus and hold it for further shots. So it's like a semi auto DMF mode.

Use the histogram AND post view blinkies views to optimise exposure for difficult shots.

I have been shooting in bright snow, dull snow, dirty snow, mixed snow and landscape for the last 3 months (probably 3000 frames of bloody snow!). Apart from becoming desperate for the flowers of spring, it's really allowed me to optimise the results from difficult material. Once I have a good shot with optimum exposure and as few blowouts as poss, I can then PP it to bringout low lights and highlights.

Finally, don't use ISO 80 or 100 if poss, stick to 125 as default minimum or 200 , as the lower iso's screw up the DR which i have learned by experience!

Hope this helps!
