I stop in this "local gift shop" now and then just in case the owner has found something I might like. It's a pretty creepy place and I'm not about to go there at night so I took this daytime pic and altered it, with the help of Effie, to how I perceive what it looks like at night. Scared me.

That's fabulous, Marlene, but then I always like your stuff. This night from day thing is great fun - and can seriously alter the mood. I did that a while ago with one of mine - highlighted in this post:

Very cool! Somehow small desert towns lend themselves for this sort of alteration. You did a great job!

Creepy, but I bet you do find some neat old stuff there! Daytime shopping sounds good to me! lol But I love what you've done with the photo.

Love your cafe image too Toad.

Very Cool. Would you tell me how you used Effie? I've just gotten it and there's no directions, so I really don't know where to begin.
Any directions (I'm new to this) are greatly appreciated.

Hi Bob,

Wow......there was a lot done to this image to give it this effect, but, if you're just looking at trying to turn a daytime sky into a black night sky.....that's easy. Just select the sky and fill with black. From that point you need to let your perception of how the lighting would be take control of what you do next. Is it moonlighting.....streetlight, neon lighting, store lighting, porch light lighting etc. You really need to create the lighting to give it the feeling of night time, just making a black sky won't work. I can't tell you how many selections in this image I made and adjusted the curves. I also created several layers...... I erased parts of layers in various amounts of opacity to subdue certain colors with a sepia layer underneath. Actually as I write this I really realize that I can't even remember all the steps.......and it wasn't important to remember the steps because every time you do this effect the steps needed will be different.
So I don't know if I've been much help, but I hope at least that I've inspired.

Very little I can add other than fantastic.

Rich,

You can purchase Effie from Mike Finn, it's an action that he created that uses Photoshop's Anistropic filter. It basically sets up the canvas for you, you can use various brushes, turn on or off layers and use different blending modes for the results you seek. A useful and affordable purchase.

Here's his website

Thanks Marlene for the prompt response.

I am now even more confused. I am no photoshop guru by any stretch of the imagination !

I can make really simple actions... but what you describe is one of those double dutch type things to me.
:)

I have not even heard of the filter you mentioned ! Dare I ask what it does ? (In laymans terms ?)

Thanks again for your response... I might just sit and admire your stuff some more :)

Can you maybe post the photograph of this image and then I can compare ?

Cheers

Rich,

Here's the original straight as it looked from camera

I only used about 30% of the Effie action blended in, but if you do a search of Effie, in this forum, you shoud find lot's of great examples that are closer to it's full effect. Look for the Effie competion thread......many great examples!

Marlene,
Very nice work! I hope the place wanted a copy.....I would think
you could barter a trade for your next purchase from them!!!

Hey Ed......that's a great idea! The only problem is that this owner, is most likely the kind of guy who could care less........really.........you should see the inside of the place. Dusty, dirty and with some pretty cool stuff piled on the floor......you literally have to dig around to see what's there......and........always dress accordingly......you will walk out of that place pretty dirty if you're "digging" for treasure.

Incredible! Just curious though, what kind of gifts do they sell there?

Junk, antiques, collectables and I think they may even have some postcards......not your average gift shop but he likes to think it's so. Even the counter, where you pay, is piled high with dusty junk......hard see the little old lady behind the counter.

Marlene, You have created the proverbial silk purse from the sow's ear. You do have an artist's eye to have envisioned this image. Great work. I was wondering how you came up with the colors? They're wonderful.

Thank you Pam! The colors are the result of having turned one layer into a sepia tone and then reducing the opacity to sort of mix the sepia with the color.
