I bought this camera after I had bad luck with a new Olympus 720C UZ. I wanted the 8x zoom feature of the Olympus. But, the quality of the photos were terrible.
I then went to BestBuy and spent 2 hours playing with the Sony cameras. I then got the P71 the next day for $349 at Circuit City (the $50 price cut surprised me). And, I must say this is an excellent camera.
It is very easy to work, the menu's are simple, the size is great, and the picture quality is very good. I was able to start taking great pictures right away. When I tried to take some pics inside with the Olympus (with or without the flash), I literally took 50-60 photos and only got 2 or 3 good ones (that is not an exageration, I got carpet burn on 1 knee from kneeling down so often to take some pics with the Olympus).
I highly recommend this camera. The 3x optical zoom is not bad, either. I've turned off the digital portion of the zoom, but the 3x is still very good.
If you are thinking of the P7 or P71, I would recommend them. I chose the cheaper P71 because I already had some rechargeable AA batteries left over from the Olympus, plus I thought the slightly larger P71 was easier to hold than the smaller P7.
