Get this camera! You won't be disapointed!
GREAT CAMERA! This is exactly what i wanted in a digital camera. I wanted a fun point-and-shoot digital camera to take pictures of my friends, partys, random cool pictures, etc. It is hard to do with a film point and shoot because of film costs, print costs, development costs, etc.
The digital camera is perfect. 3.2 Megapixels is more then enough. when you shoot at the full 3.2 megapixel level, you can print up to an 8x10 print with the same quality as film. There are even new digital camera printing kiosks in Ritz camera where you simply put your digi card in, select what frame/size/quantity you'd like, and for $0.44 per print you can get pro lab prints in about 20 minutes. it is great!
As far as this camera goes, it is amazing! It is about the size of two decks of cards stacked on top of each other. It is EXTREMELY pocketable, which is exactly what i wanted. The start-up time is very fast, as well as it's shut down time. It seems very receptive to turning on, taking a few photos, then turning off. Then turning on a few seconds later, taking a new photo, etc. Battery life seems great so far.
The different 'scene' modes are all pretty cool. Sunset, dusk, etc. are all pretty cool, and they do seem to influence the resulting photo vs. the regular 'auto' shot.
The camera also brings back the Nikon 'spring loaded' on/off switch immediately below the shutter button. It is great because it is very hard to accidentally turn the camera on/off if it is in your pocket.
The macro functions are very good, and easily accesable. The Flash options (auto flash, no flash, red eye flash, etc) are all very easily accesable with only one or two touches of the back circle button.
There is also a VERY easy delete system. Some cameras take 7 or 8 steps to delete a photo. Not this one. There is a delete button on the back. In playback mode, simply hit the delete button, it asks to confirm the delete, and you're done. You can also delete all the photos on a card easily also.
To enter playback mode, it is just one button touch, which is very cool.
Transfering the photos is VERY easy. Camera comes with Nikon View 6. after instalation, just plug in USB cord, turn on,a nd the software automatically asks if you want to transfer the card's contents to the hard drive. just hit 'transfer' and you're done! i set it up to delete the card photos after the transfer is done, and that's it! each transfer creates a new folder so re-naming the folder to the date (YYYY-MM-DD) is super easy and keeps things organized.
Also, only runs off two AA batteries, so just grab a 4 pack of Ni-MH recargable Energizer 1850 batteries and you're set!
I've been so stoked on this camera i've taken about 110 already in the three day's i've had it, and had no problems.
You really don't need Av, Tv, M modes, etc. A simple, great, solid digital is all you'd need to have fun with digital photography, and this is that camera!
$350.00 is a GREAt price also. Awesome!
Problems:
The ISO is automatically selected, but there is no override fuction. For example: if you wanted to shoot a tripod shot of a lighted building at night. The best way to do this is to have ISO 100 or 50 and have a long shutter speed. the problem is, because there is no override, the camera automatically selects the highest ISO (800) and because of that there is a lot of digital noise on the night photo.
ONLY drawback i have is the plastic casing of the camera. could be a problem if it drops, but i'm gong to be careful.
Battery Life -- Tonight, the packaged with the camera battery finally died. It gave a good solid week of shots, and got to 360 shots before it died. Also it gets props because the last 100 or so were taken tonight, in the span of 3 hours, and the flash and the LCD were going on constantly, so that had to be a power drain.
Buy some AA Energizer 1850 mAh re-chargable batteries and be set. Also, don't just throw batteries away! recycle them!
Also, i have found that after the battery-low indicator lights up (at about 60% of its life), subsequent flash-recharge takes extra 2 seconds with the LCD automatically temporarily shut off. That can be annoying! What happens is you take a flash photo, it displays it on the monitor, then it all blacks out for a whole 2 seconds, while the red flash light by the viewfinder flashes on and off. Then finally the hourglass symbol comes up, and the LCD boots back up. It seems to take a lifetime to get back up, but that's all. Just make sure to have fresh re-charged batteries. Remember, batteries that sit there loose some charge.
