I read a lot of reviews before opting for the S7000, and was almost put off buying it by adverse comments about image noise. However, it is an excellent prosumer camera and the image quality is actually very good.

Yes, image noise is generated under low light conditions (esp. at lower resolutions). However this is overcome by using the 12MP Fine/RAW options (and using the Flash in low light).

Overall the camera looks great and responds very nicely and would be ideally suited for trade journalists or other media professionals who occassionally need to take decent quality digital photos, but can't justify the expense or steeper learning curve of a digital SLR.

Before choosing the S7000, I considered the EOS 300 D. But by the time you've factored in the cost of a couple of extra lenses, storage cards, etc, etc, in the UK you're looking at spending around £1500. And unless you're a pro, the image quality offered by the Fuji seems more than sufficient (for less than half the price).

Would also recommend the S7RAW shareware prog, that lets you output RAW files as 16bit PhotShop docs.

Video output is also good at 640 x 480 (saves carrying round a video camera if you only want to produce clips to view on screen).

N.B. Yes, the Sony F828 has a fantastic lens, but the image output at highest quality settings doesn't appear vastly different from the Fuji. So why spend the extra?

Problems:

The 16 Mb card that comes with the S7000 is a joke. Allow an extra hundred pounds for a high capacity storage card, and a fast AA battery charger.

Even so, it's great value for money.
