The Mavica mvc-cd500 is a strangely under- rated camera and dosen't seem to be selling that well and may die a death at Sony.Maybe I am biased but I think it will become a collectible item.

That being said it is an excellent camera for macro photography due to its shorter Zeiss 102mm equivalent zoom. This also an ideal size for portraiture

I have rectified the telephoto capability with an Olympus TCON-17 and this works well.

It is also great in the field or travelling as I can buy over a gigabytes worth of imation mini cd-r for AUD$7.OO ,which means a lot of shooting(approx 1100!) without having to download or buy expensive cards etc.The images arrive out of the camera already backed up onto disc,so very little risk of losing a shot.

It is also an excellent infrared camera-allowing IR shots in all modes, not just night mode as is the case with 717's and 828's.ISO sensitivity only extends to 400 however it is excellent in low light-higher speed appears almost unnecessary.I do a lot of shooting with a tripod ,or a rice bag at the very least, so this is not a real concern.

It's also quite tough-initial fears centered around the delicacy of the cd burner etc-i am happy..well not exactly happy,to say that it has survived two drops-once outside onto the ground and another sickening accident when my
tripod head snapped and it fell over six feet onto concrete. It started up immediately and works fine, not even a casing scratch or dead pixel to show for it.
