I've had this camera since 2003. Overall I've never really liked it a lot. I found it a bit too fiddly to work with - it has some very powerful features, but I have to go into the menus more than I want to in order to use them. I've frequently been frustrated with the poor low/medium-light autofocus. Manual focus is very difficult to use, almost useless unless you have the camera on a tripod and plenty of time to focus. This brings me to what I think is this camera's forte, which is macro work. It takes very good photos at close range.
All in all it is a pretty good camera if you invest the time to master it.
What I like about it:
- Great for macros
- RAW format
- Compatible with advanced Nikon external flashes
- Full manual control
- Well built, and decent handling
- Many cool features
- Good movie mode
Problems:
The only fault I've found with my model is that when I have the screen flipped out and twisted slightly, the screen image keeps flipping upside down, which it's only meant to do when you slip the screen upside down. This happened inside the warranty period and I didn't have it repaired, so I only have myself to blame.
General dislikes:
- Autofocus basically doesn't work in low light
- Very slow to write to CF card - extremely painful if you use TIFF (but RAW is not so bad)
- Manual focus is very hard to use
- Fiddly to access most advanced features
- Locks up for ages when buffer is full and it has to write to CF card (can't even zoom/adjust anything)
- Playback mode is on mode dial, not own button
