I moved to FX (D700) primarily because I can use the superior new lenses that have
been launched by Nikon recently, notably the 14-24mm, 24-70mm. The results are
simply outstanding and well justifies the investment. I would also retain the DX
(D300) which becomes useful for longer zooms because of 1.5x factor. Very close
similarities between the D700 and D300 make them highly complementary, so I keep
both bodies and sets of FX/DX lenses.
Problems:
Key issue is the weight of the new lenses you'll need to lug around if you want to
maximise the use of the D700 - it can become a challenge to carry around the 14-24,
24-70, 70-200 glass + accessories. With the D300, you could get away with just the
18-200VR. All things considered, it's a trade off between superior optics vs logistics
and practicality.
