It's a question of references what marks you put, isn't it? After using a p&s canon ixus for some 5 yrs I started to long for all the control I had with my OM1 and 2 SLRs. Still, I wanted to be able to carry the camera with me all the time in a pocket. So the canon G10 was not an option - the LX3 was the only choice because a wide angle and a low f-stop was also on my req spec... After using it for a week now, on a keen amateur level, I do certainly not regret buying it. This is what you get today if you want state of the art acc to my spec (control, angle, f-stop). I take interior and architecture shots, even in low light without flash, that I just dreamed about before. I am going back a lot to B&W to capture the underlying structures of objects, sceneries and faces etc. I am really having fun with this little gem...
Problems:
Battery life - seems I need to buy any extra battery to be sure to cover a full day.
LCD screen - difficult to read in bright sunlight, want the extra view finder, expensive :-(
Image quality - a bit surprised that JPEG out of the camera is not better. Anyhow it's still ok for my purposes.
RAW format - Would like Panasonic to use Adobe DNG...
