Although Canon announced a competitor that should be even more flexible (it has a built in 1.4x TC) it is not to be found anywhere. This lens is superbly sharp at any aperture and begs to be shot wide open. So who cares if it is heavy. You quickly forget that when you see the results. Contrasty sharp and color accurate at any aperture and very resistant to flare and ghosting (if any)
Problems:
This lens performs poorly when subject distance is great, more than 1/2. The image quality suffers a lot especially on older Nikon bodies like D2Xs. Much better on D3 series and D300 series especially with 2x TC III.
Some vignetting wide open at 400mm which has been greatly reduced on the new VR-II/Nano coating version.
