This is for 717 owners who are also buying the V-1. Will the V-1 replace the 717? If you plan to use them both, other than portability, when would you use one over the other? I'm trying to decide which of these cameras to buy. Thanks for your insights.

Lynda hello, I plan on holding a V1 before I purchase - the main
draw to such an item is its small size. I would use them both.

The V1 has a smaller sensor, slower 4:1 zoom lens, no swivel body, only an LCD and an optical tunnel viewfinder. It's primary appeal is that it is compact and handy, pocketable. I'd carry it when the F717 is a bit too bulky, but I would not give up the F717.

I can't believe people have an extra 6 hundred to buy basically the same camera but smaller . I believe it and not to belittle anyone but perhaps someone might expect a different sensor , something better besides size?

--No way will I get rid of my 717. The 717 will be used for my tele lens and for sporting events. My little V-1 will be my everyday carry along camera. But if I had to choose the 717 stays.

  • It is our choice and if you can't see that forget it. The camera is very small. It is smaller than the G-3 and the S-50. For me it will be just the right size.

Sorry if this offends your sensibilities, Rick, but for some folks a pocketable camera is very useful in addition to a larger, more proficient model even if it's not quite as good. The $600 is not trivial but is well within what many people spend for a single lens for a DSLR or interchangeable lens film camera.

I know some folks with Leica M cameras who have three/four of the same lens, at $800 to $1300 a pop. Now that's a little silly... to me. ;-)

Just a thought: For those of us who own a 717 and also purchase the V1 for $700, what will you do in October when Sony releases the next version of the 717? Especially, if the next 7X7 has 6 megapixels and other features worthy of upgrading the 717 for? This can get very expensive.

If thye came out with a better replacement for the 717, I would put my order in and get rid of the 717. Some of us have been doing this for YEARS.

Actually , your right , for many people photography is more thne a point and shoot camera. I didn't mean to offend anyone . In a sense since many here follow Sony, perhaps there was something more that I missed. I really liked the photos that I saw and just wondered maybe there was something better hidden away? lol

Just as I did when the F717 came out, I will evaluate whether the upgrades are compelling enough for me to trade up or not. Yes, it can be expensive if you're always trying to have only the very latest and greatest, but it's completely up to you to manage your money per your desires and needs. Just because a new model is available doesn't mean your existing one stops working ...

--I agree there are still a ton of died hard 707 users out there. After I get my V-1 that is it for me. I just retired so now I live on a fixed income so camera chasing is out of the question. Unless of course I get a part time job. lol I am still young eonugh to do that so who knows I guess it would have to depend on how nice the new 787 is.

A few of the responses suggest that the v1 is pocketable and therefore a good "take everywhere" camera. It is 2.2" thick, and I wouldn't find it particularly pocketable. Am I missing something?

The listed thickness is a little deceptive as it measures from the back to the front of the lens bezel/surround; much of the camera is thinner than that. Compared to other cameras in this size class I use (Rollei 35S and Minox 35GT-E), it's right in the middle. It will fit nicely in a jacket or coat pocket, even a large pants pocket, and certainly in the kind of small belt or shoulder carry-all that I find myself using for all the other junk I carry around all the time (cell phone, palm v, pen and small notebook, wallet, keys, Minox camera, sunglasses, etc).

For comparison sake, here are dimensions of five "pocketable" cameras, sorted by weight:

Minox 35GT-E: 100 x 61 x 34 cm (3.9 x 2.4 x 1.3 in) 200g
Canon S400: 87 x 57 x 28 mm (3.4 x 2.2 x 1.1 in) 230g
Sony DSC-V1: 99 x 65 x 57 mm (3.9 x 2.6 x 2.2 in) 298g
Canon S 50: 112 x 58 x 42 mm (4.4 x 2.3 x 1.7 in) 323g
Rollei 35S: 97 x 60 x 44 mm (3.2 x 2.4 x 1.7 in) 325g

Of these, the little Canon S400 is definitely the teensiest, but it doesn't have anywhere near the feature set of the V1.
