I experiment a new workflow with nx2.

I use a picture control named Kodak-T-Max 400 found on internet.

I use sharpness at level 7

No noise reduction

No D-lightning

Then resize to 1500px

apply noise reduction 1% or more, opacity (between 30 and 100%)

apply sharpening (12%,5%,0)

adjust expositon, low light and hightligth with quick corrections

Are they oversharpened for your eyes and screen ? Thanks

On the first shot, the eyebrows look unnaturally vivid at 100%. Not really an issue at smaller sizes. I like the way her glasses pop a little, but I don't know if that's effect you wanted. Sharpening tends to accentuate hard features like that. On the third, also at 100% but still visible to a small degree at smaller size, the man's beret shows just a slight bright border sharpening artifact against the bright sign in the background. There's also more noise in the hair of cell-phone gal than you'd want, seems to me, possibly increased by the sharpening. Otherwise, I think you nailed it. Excellent results to my eye! I especially like the last one.

Hello,

I think they are excellent. The last one is my favourite. But I like the 1st one very much too. Very sharp, but not oversharpened IMO. It would be different if that lady was much younger :-).

Would you mind tell me how you installed this picture control? I've found something on the net, but I don't have a clue as to how download it and install it on the V1, which I'm discovering, and like a lot.

Thanks,

BTW, I noticed the pictures were shot in Lille. My son is studying there (Sciences Po). Maybe you're french?

If so, then Bonne soirée !

Oh, sorry, I meant the beret in the third photo. You're right that there's a similar artifact with the beret in the last shot too, but because the beret is bigger there, and the artifact therefore smaller relative to the beret, it's less of a problem to my eye. Unless you want to do some hand retouching, it's usually a matter of compromise to get the best results overall. Personally, I think the new correction you did is just a little too soft in comparison with the rest of the man's figure, and prefer the first version. But you could probably find some middle ground if you wanted.

Really, I think they're very nicely sharpened, and only pointed out slight details in case that's what you were looking for. What size would you use them at?

I only see the photos after correction and I believe there is enough here to print beautiful A3+ without any problem, maybe even 17x22. The B & W conversion seems also great, with a well balanced classic look. Bon travail!

For the Picture Control, i don't remember where I found it (perhaps http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=248&t=789854),

you have to copy the files here,

in the memory card of your nikon in a folder named NIKON and a subfolder named CUSTOMPC :

Then you will be abble to load it in Picture Controle launched from Nx2 and for your camera if you want.

The list is here :

I like also 01.Kodak E100 VS for color rendering

Thank you very much!

Works perfectly.

Et merci pour Istanbul !

Andrbar, I am not sure how happy the elderly lady in the first picture is with the sharpness of your pix, but I like it :-)

You should be careful when sharpening and check each pic at 100% magnification to check for artefacts (mentioned in post up) and halo's (check for strange transitions between for example black letters and a white surface).

I tried the presets in my V1 and it is absolute fun, thank you.

But other than previewing black and white in your viewfinder and maybe having the preset in NX2 , what is the advantage of these presets? How do you use tem in practice, what are the benefits?

My workflow is Photoshop or NX2 and then Nik silverefx pro or colorfx pro. I begin to like NX2 more and more but I am relatively new user of it.

I come from the D700, and it's sometime difficult to get good IQ from the nikon 1.
But my target is the web (1500x1000) and I have just tryed to apply noise reduction and sharpening after size reduction.
I found that the effect of noise reduction in this case is quick and smooth and i can get what i want more easier.
For the T-Max curve, it's a choice, without this curve as a reference, I always search for a well balanced picture playing with the quick adjustment menu of NX2.
I was also influenced by Craig Litten, Joe Wigfall, Bill Harris whom I like the B&W pictures.
Perhaps, tomorow I shall do differently, I have to search and experiment more and more.
excuse my poor english.

Your English is better than my French!

You're getting excellent results. I hope you'll post some more of them here. Do people you're photographing react differently to your V1 than the D700?

With the D700 I often used a remote controller with a 35mm or a 24mm, but it's very noisy and I have to keep some distance. Today, I use a J1 with 10mm on my left side and a V1 with 30-110 around my neck. So I'm ready to shoot in all cases without disturb people. I don't look at the J1 screen, I'm accustomed to "fire at the hip" but I like the EVF of the V1 for longer local length and also I like his light weight. The one is really a good system for street photo.

I like it

Thanks for your encouraging post

Very nice setup! Being able to shoot from the hip, as it were, is a great skill to develop for street shooting. I wish the V1 had a movable LCD screen to help with that, but if you can shoot without staring at the back of camera, that's even better.

I particularly like that last one. Nice work!

Great photos. I can see minor sharpening artifacts in a few of these at 100% but not enough to worry about IMHO.

Here's another location that's a little easier to download the .NCP files from (I couldn't seem to download from the Chinese site without registering, which is more trouble than I wanted to go to in translated Chinese :-)

Yes it's my source and it's why I put the files on my server here ,

thanks for your comment.

Thanks Srethore, I understand now that you use the TM400 presets to get a better starting point in NX. I also began to play with the picture control tool curve interesting, thanks again.

I am new to NX2, so in my old workflow wit Adobe Camera Raw the Nikon camera presets were not used.

Funny you mentioned Craig Litten. I had some contact with Craig lately about the V1 and our street work, a fine photographer and a nice person.

Coming from Photoshop, I am getting more interested in NX2 (because of the V1) while a lot of people seem to leave NX2 and turn to PS or LR.

I tried to imitate this picture - done in Silverefx pro - in NX2 and NX2 seems able to give great results. I will post the NX2 version tomorrow since I can't get to it now.

V1, 10mm f2.8 @ f2.8 and iso 800 in a dimly lit laundromat (PS + Silverefx pro)
