Has anybody here had any experience with B&H exchange policy for a lens. I'm going to have to try a different copy of the 24-70 which diffenitly has the aperture problem. I just cannot see paying to send this lens off to Tamron for repair at my expense. Does B&H handle exchanges like Amazon.com?

B+H is good about returns and exchanges in my experience. Call them on the phone. You'll have a choice of whether to return/refund, exchange for same, or get something else. All this assuming you are within the stated return period.

As long as it is within 30 days there should not be a problem. I had to exchange a tripod head because some of the finish was chipped off. They e-mailed me a return shipping label and I had a replacement about a week later. B&H is a excellent company to deal with.

B&H is one of the BEST retailers to deal with (besides Costco) in regard to returns. I would echo the previous reply that they will email you a return slip with pre-paid shipping. They process it fairly quickly! I have so much confidence that if I need a replacement or an exchange, I will just order another item knowing that the refund will occur swiftly. B&H is my Number 1 place I turn to when purchasing photo/electronic equipment.

I've bought a number of lenses and other items from B&H over the years. Had one lens (new 105vr) that had something wrong with - probably a decentered element. Corners were mushy bad.

I called them up, said I had an issue, and they immediately issued me an RMA. Shipped me a replacement lens (which was fine) at the next level up from the original order. (If original order was 2-day, the replacement shipped as 1-day). They also allow you to either send the lens back and then get a replacement at no cost, or get a new replacement shipped immediately if you give them a credit card number. (In case you don't end up sending back the original product). I opted to have a new lens shipped immediately, and the whole process was clean, simple and pleasant.

I think you are making a mistake. If the lens goes to Tamaron it will come back fixed. Getting another lens from B&H does not guarantee that the second lens may have other problems.

Dont be cheap for $10 or $15 postage.

especially if they send back someone else's returned product. for peace of mind, make sure to instruct B&H to send a fresh new unopened product replacement.

B&H has always been an excellent company to deal with. These "bad copy", "defective unit" situations are quite common. Unfortunately, we photogs are an "extension" of a mfgr's QC dept. Sad, but true. It sounds like the issue you have is a "known problem" with this lens. Therefore, to me, it's a "defective unit" and should be sent back for a replacement - and that being a new, unopened box unit - and NOT someone else's reject.

Hope that you get a good repacement soon.

Thanks for the responses from everyone. I have new copy coming and the old one has departed. I was playing around with some of the pictures I took with the lens on my D600 and while doing so I noticed a tremendous amount of CA, some of the worse I've seen to be truthful. I do not remember that CA's were a problem with this lens. I do hope I get a good copy, the OS is great and the only reason I don't buy the Nikon variant. I need OS more and more.

Hi Jay,

While I can't comment on returning a lens to B&H, I recently had to return a defective ball head. It was past the 30 day return time by more than a week, but they took it back and sent me a brand new one with no hassle, whatsoever. B&H has some of the best customer service that I have ever experienced and that's why I have become a loyal customer of theirs.

So, I received a replacement for the 24-70 Tramron from B&H. Checked the diaphragm and it's doing the same thing, not closing down until f4. I'm taking it out today to see how it performs otherwise, if it does well with exception of diaphragm (the last one had unimaginal CA's). I'm thinking I will send it to Tamron for repair if the lens performs as well as I expect it to, with the exception of the diaphragm problem of course. I'll keep the info coming about the process for your information.

Also I did some test shots with the flash. The pictures at f3.5 are brighter than at 2.8 (using manual exposure keeping the shutter speed the same and varying the f stop.) this tells me the camera is getting the stopped down values so the flash puts out more light but the aperture is still at f2.8 but the flash doesn't know.

I'd think a more valid test would be without flash, as that adds a variable you don't need.

Set up a tripod indoor, and stick the camera on manual, on a fixed ISO value. Set a reasonable shutter speed for the lighting, and shoot at each aperture. Watch the histograms for each shot, either in-camera or later. The histograms should shift to the dark side for each shot.
